Last Night in Baseball: D-backs make nearly impossible 9th-inning comeback

Fills in at first base Tawa went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in Thursday's 11-10 win over Atlanta.

Impact Tawa entered as a pinch hitter for first baseman Pavin Smith and remained in the game to play the same position. It was the second time this season Tawa played first base. Arizona might normally use Josh Naylor to fill-in at first, but he had started the game as the DH and eventually left with a shoulder injury. If Naylor's injury forces him to miss time, Smith would be the likely starter at first base against righties. Against lefties, Tawa, Lourdes Gurriel or Ildemaro Vargas could start.

Impact Tawa doubled in the ninth inning and scored Arizona's second run on a Ketel Marte single. It was an important run the team needed, as closer Justin Martinez allowed a run in the bottom of the frame. Since Marte returned from the injured list in early May, forcing Tawa into a part-time role as a fill-in outfielder against left-handers, the rookie has handled the transition well. He's batting .271 (13-for-48) with four extra-base hits, four RBI, four steals and five runs over 19 games in the part-time role.

Tawa was dislodged from an infield utility role when the Diamondbacks called up Jordan Lawlar, but he'll fill the short side of a platoon in center. Staying put in MLB, new role Tawa will transition to more of an outfield role after the Diamondbacks called up Jordan Lawlar from Triple-A Reno on Monday, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.

Impact Tawa survived Lawlar's promotion with his spot on the MLB roster intact; instead, Arizona designated infielder/outfielder Garrett Hampson for assignment. Tawa had filled in at second base when Ketel Marte was on the injured list and served as a utility infielder since Marte's return. Lawlar will now be the utility infielder, as Tawa transitions to an outfield role, which will include center field. He made one start in left field for the Diamondbacks this season and 26 across the outfield in 2024 while in the minors. He could serve as the right-handed batting complement to Alek Thomas in center field.

MLB window may close Tawa's time in the majors may come to an end, if the Diamondbacks intend to call-up Jordan Lawlar from Triple-A Reno, as reported by Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.

Impact The obvious question regarding Lawlar, the organization's top prospect, is where he would play, given that Arizona has incumbents at the three positions at which he has experience: second base, shortstop and third base. The report suggests a utility role for Lawler -- three to four times per week -- which is duplicative of Tawa's current role. That notion was supported by manager Torey Lovullo, who said Sunday that he wants impact players on the roster regardless of fit.

Impact Tawa was the primary fill-in at second base while Marte was on the IL, and, as expected, he opened Friday's game on the bench. He eventually pinch hit for Alek Thomas in the ninth. Marte, who is coming back from a hamstring injury, will not play second base every day, so Tawa will fill-in on those days when Marte serves as the designated hitter. Tawa will also play third base and center field. "We got to get him working full-speed in center field, and you'll maybe see him get some reps out there," Lovullo said. Tawa batted .190/.304/.483 with seven extra-base hits, including five home runs, over 58 at-bats while Marte was idled.
