INJURIES

Throws off flat ground Antone (hip) threw off flat ground Tuesday and hopes to return to game action Sunday against the Brewers, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact Antone has received plenty of hype this offseason thanks to his 2.80 ERA and 31.9 percent strikeout rate as a rookie last year. It hasn't been the smoothest spring for him, however, as he's dealt with both groin and hip issues. Neither issue has been particularly significant, though, and neither is an arm problem, so there's seemingly no reason to fear for his long-term health.

Trending in right direction Antone (hip) is trending in the right direction and still appears set to make the Opening Day roster, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.
Impact Antone has had a bit of a disrupted spring, dealing with a minor groin issue and now a minor hip problem. The Reds remain optimistic about his chances of avoiding the injured list, though it's still not clear exactly what role he'll serve. He's in the mix as both a starter and a high-leverage reliever.

Hip flexor irritation Antone stopped a side bullpen session Saturday due to irritation to his hip flexor, but it's not going to shut him down from his throwing program, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports....
Impact While it may not shut down Antone's throwing program, it may slow down his chances of winning a spot in the Reds' rotation, at least to begin the season. Nonetheless, he can still be of value in an ace reliever role, especially with the uncertainty at the back end of the Reds' bullpen.
MARCH 22, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Another side session on tap Antone (groin) will throw a side session Saturday, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact Antone remains day-to-day while recovering from a right groin strain. If he doesn't experience any setbacks during his throwing session Saturday, Antone could return to Cactus League play soon and should remain on track for Opening Day. Assuming he's healthy to begin the regular season, the right-hander could be in the rotation right away considering Sonny Gray (back) doesn't expect to be ready for Opening Day.

Remains day-to-day Reds manager David Bell continued to label Antone (groin) as day-to-day Wednesday, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.
Impact Antone's groin injury will prevent him from making a start this weekend as had been planned, but the Red are optimistic he'll be able to complete a bullpen session. If he escapes the side session without any new discomfort to his right groin, Antone should remain on track for Opening Day.

Optimistic Reds believe key pieces are in place to win now

The Cincinnati Reds say the key pieces are in place for them to make a run in the National League Central

Side session upcoming Antone (groin) will likely throw a side session later this week, and while he will probably miss his next start, he's only going to be set back a few days from his regular schedule...
Impact Even with the couple days of delay, the outlook for Antone remains positive. It's still possible that he won't win a rotation spot to begin the season if the Reds decide they want Michael Lorenzen to start. However, Sonny Gray's injury has created another opening in the rotation for the first weeks or so of the campaign.

Expects to make next start Antone (groin) expects to make his next Cactus League start, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact Antone felt a small tweak in his groin during the third inning of Sunday's spring start against the Padres, but he sounded upbeat after the game and said that he thinks he'll be fine. While the Reds will presumably monitor him over the next few days, it doesn't sound as though Antone's injury will be a long-term issue.
MARCH 14, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Exits with injury Antone left Sunday's spring game against the Padres due to a mild right groin strain, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.
Impact Antone allowed four runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks while striking out five over 2.2 innings during Sunday's start, but he was unable to complete the third frame due to a groin issue. It's not yet clear whether the injury will force Antone to miss additional time or whether the issue will impact his availability for Opening Day.

Another good outing Antone threw three scoreless innings against the Rockies on Monday, striking out three with no walks while allowing two hits.
Impact The difference between this outing and his previous spring training appearance was that Antone started this game and got to work on his pre-start routine a little more. A report Friday suggested that Michael Lorenzen is the leading candidate for the fifth starter's job, but Antone continues to make a pretty good case for the role.

Electric spring debut Antone struck out five of the seven batters he faced in his spring training debut Wednesday, throwing between 97-to-99 mph on his fastball while mixing in a sharp slider, Charlie G...
Impact Antone is in a battle for the Reds' fifth starter job, with Wade Miley presumably the favorite to take the fourth starter's role. It would behoove the Reds to find as many innings for both Antone and Michael Lorenzen, even if one of them doesn't get in the starting rotation to begin the season.

Bauer-less Reds fall back on the familiar for rotation

Cincinnati Reds manager David Bell is going to have to figure out how to work around the departures of two pitchers who were among his most important players last season
FEBRUARY 19, 2021 • Associated Press
Battling for rotation spot Antone is in a job battle with Wade Miley and Michael Lorenzen for a rotation spot, as the Reds are leaning towards using a five-man rotation, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati E...
Impact The Reds, like many other teams, have discussed the possibility of a six-man rotation, but for now it looks more likely they'll open the season with a conventional five-man crew. It's going to be a fluid situation for Cincinnati and many other teams, particularly with younger pitchers that need to have their workload monitored.

Bullpen role forthcoming? Antone was mentioned as one of the internal alternatives at closer by manager David Bell following the trade of Raisel Iglesias to the Angels, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
Impact Antone split time between the rotation and the bullpen in his rookie season, starting four games while relieving in nine others, often pitching multiple innings. He proved to have quite a bit of success in relief and missed plenty of bats along the way. The one statistical red flag is that he gave up 16 walks in 35.1 innings.

Returns to bullpen Antone has made his last two appearances out of the Cincinnati bullpen, working 3.1 scoreless no-hit frames and striking out three while issuing two walks.
Impact Antone made three starts for the Reds between Aug. 29 and Sept. 12, but the rookie has seemingly transitioned back to a relief role with Cincinnati set to get its rotation back to full strength Tuesday, when Sonny Gray (back) is in line to start in his return from the 10-day injured list. The righty has proven to be a dominant multi-inning weapon out of the bullpen this season, holding opposing hitters to a lowly .060/.175/.140 slash line while striking out 21 of the 57 hitters he's faced in relief.
