Impact With Zac Gallen coming off the injured list to make his first start of the season, the Diamondbacks were cautious with his pitch count, so Clarke entered in the fifth inning with Arizona leading 5-1. He set down six straight A's before tiring in the seventh. He had Kevin Ginkel wasted Gallen's effort. For Clarke, it was was his fifth appearance and second in which he was required to threw more than an inning. He's been bypassed for a possible rotation spot twice already, by Taylor Widener and Riley Smith, so middle/long-relief may be his lot for the season.

Impact Clarke's expected middle-inning/mop-up role out of the bullpen will limit his fantasy appeal, but he should be the next man up for a rotation spot if Widener falters or if one of the Diamondbacks' current starters misses time. The 27-year-old has made 17 starts for Arizona between the past two seasons, turning in a 5.67 ERA across 87.1 innings.

Impact Clarke, who has a 2.25 ERA in 12 Cactus League innings, is the leading candidate to replace the injured Zac Gallen (forearm) in the rotation. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo will discuss plans for the rotation going forward with coaches in the next few days, and Clarke's role will be one topic. His flexibility could be helpful, but the obvious need right now is replacing Gallen.

Impact Gallen was diagnosed with a hairline fracture of the forearm and will miss an indefinite amount of time. That naturally leads to speculation about the candidates to replace him in the rotation. At this point in spring training, Clarke is the most built-up depth starter at 12 innings, followed closely by Seth Frankoff (11.2 IP). Clarke gets the edge over Frankoff based on spring numbers and MLB experience. The right-handed Clarke has allowed three runs on 13 hits and two walks while striking out 10 this spring.

It was a perfect opportunity to extend Clarke, who will serve as starting depth and a multi-inning reliever in 2021. He's thrown eight innings over three Cactus League appearances.

There's clearly a need to upgrade the bullpen, and Clarke has an opportunity. The right-hander allowed 35 hits and 21 walks while striking out 40 over 43.1 innings in 2020. He posted a 4.36 ERA over five starts and seven relief appearances.
