Lands on 10-day IL Brault was placed on the 10-day injured list with a recurrent left lat strain Saturday, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Impact Brault was removed from Friday's game against the Nationals due to left arm discomfort, but he's apparently been dealing with a lat issue for some time. He'll miss at least one turn through the rotation, and it's not yet clear whether he'll have enough time to return prior to the end of the regular season. Right-hander Connor Overton was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday, but the Pirates haven't announced who will take Brault's place in the rotation.

Impact The southpaw didn't bounce back very well after getting lit up for seven runs in three innings versus St. Louis last Saturday. Brault had given up just four runs in 18.2 innings across his first four starts prior to his recent two-start skid. He now owns a 5.61 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 18:10 K:BB in 25.2 innings this year. The 29-year-old lines up for a home start versus Washington next week.

Crushed in short outing Brault (0-3) lasted only three innings against St. Louis on Saturday, allowing seven runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out one to take the loss.

Impact The left-hander breezed through the first inning and gave up two runs in the second before falling apart in the third. The Cardinals got to Brault for six hits and five runs in that frame, with opposing pitcher Adam Wainwright dealing the final blow with a run-scoring single. Brault hadn't given up more than two earned runs in any of his previous four appearances this season, but Saturday's disastrous start pushed his ERA from 1.93 all the way up to 4.57. He'll try to bounce back in his next start, which is tentatively scheduled to come on the road against the Cubs next week.

Impact Brault didn't have his best stuff in this one, as he finished with more walks than strikeouts for the first time in 2021 and also failed to pitch more than four innings since his season debut. While he still owns a 1.93 ERA with a 1.07 WHIP, two figures that would rank as career-best marks for him, it's also worth mentioning that he's been struggling to pitch deep into games and that clearly reduces his fantasy appeal.

He's throwing his fastball less than ever (36.6 percent), whether that's by design isn't known, but opponents have barreled his pitches at a 19.2 percent clip, well above his career mark (5.8 percent). The last-place Pirates will likely handle Brault with kid-glove care, limiting his workload the rest of the way - he's totaled nine innings (153 pitches) in his two outings after throwing 42.2 frames in 2020.
