Matthew Liberatore - Back in big leagues The Cardinals recalled Liberatore from Triple-A Memphis on Monday.
Impact It's been a busy three days for Liberatore. He was called up for his big-league debut Saturday before being optioned the next day, only to rejoin St. Louis one day later with Steven Matz (shoulder) landing on the injured list. It's unclear exactly how long Matz's absence will last, but Liberatore will get the chance to replace him in the rotation and should have at least a couple more starts to prove he belongs in the big leagues. His debut wasn't particularly good, as he allowed four runs in 4.2 innings against the lowly Pirates, but he's talented enough that there's reason to expect more going forward. According to Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat, Liberatore is scheduled to make his second start with the Cardinals next Saturday versus the Brewers in St. Louis.

Lars Nootbaar - Called up after three-homer game The Cardinals recalled Nootbaar from Triple-A Memphis on Monday.
Impact Nootbaar will make the jump to the big leagues fresh off going 3-for-5 with three home runs and seven RBI on Sunday in Memphis' 10-4 win over Gwinnett. Overall, Nootbaar produced a 1.050 OPS across 50 plate appearances with Memphis following his demotion from the Cardinals on April 25. While he's up with the Cardinals for the second time this season, the lefty-hitting Nootbaar could vie for a strong-side platoon role in the corner outfield with both Dylan Carlson (hamstring) and Tyler O'Neill (shoulder) on the 10-day injured list.

Junior Fernández - Joins St. Louis bullpen The Cardinals recalled Fernandez from Triple-A Memphis on Monday.
Impact Fernandez will join the St. Louis bullpen as a fresh-armed replacement for Angel Rondon, who was optioned to Memphis after tossing five innings and 86 pitches in long relief during Sunday's 18-4 win over the Pirates. The 25-year-old right-hander is up with the big club for the first time in 2022, but he made 18 relief appearances for St. Louis in 2021 and produced a 5.66 ERA and 1.94 WHIP across 20.2 innings.

Steven Matz - Lands on injured list Matz was placed on the 15-day injured list Monday with a left shoulder impingement.
Impact Matz left his start Sunday against the Pirates after throwing just four pitches due to what was originally called shoulder stiffness. He underwent an MRI later in the day, though for now the injury isn't being referred to as anything worse than an impingement. He'll be eligible to return June 7, but it's not yet clear when the Cardinals expect him back. Matthew Liberatore was recalled to take his place in the rotation.

Dylan Carlson - Placed on IL The Cardinals placed Carlson on the 10-day injured list Monday with a left hamstring strain.
Impact He'll be replaced on the 26-man active roster by Lars Nootbaar, whom the Cardinals recalled from Triple-A Memphis in a corresponding move. Along with Nootbaar, Corey Dickerson, Juan Yepez and Brendan Donovan are the main candidates to pick up starts at either corner-outfield spot while Carlson and Tyler O'Neill (shoulder) are on the shelf. The timing of the move to the IL is especially disappointing for Carlson, who had rebounded from a wretched April to produce a .314/.351/.486 slash line through his first 20 games of May.

Angel Rondón - Optioned after long-relief outing The Cardinals optioned Rondon to Triple-A Memphis on Monday.
Impact Rondon's demotion comes one day after he was called up from Memphis to provide St. Louis with a multi-inning option out of the bullpen for Sunday's series finale with the Pirates. The 24-year-old right-hander ended up seeing more usage than expected in the Cardinals' 18-4 win, as he was needed in long relief after starter Steven Matz lasted just four pitches before checking out of the contest due to a shoulder injury. Rondon proceeded to strike out four while blanking the Pirates over five innings en route to collecting his first career MLB win. Matz is set to undergo an MRI on Monday and could wind up on the injured list, but at least for the short term, the Cardinals decided that Rondon's spot on the active roster was better used for another player. Even if Matz's shoulder issue results in an IL stint, the Cardinals won't need to replace him in the rotation until May 30, at which point Rondon or Matthew Liberatore could be called up from Triple-A if needed to fill in as St. Louis' fifth starter.
