Carlos Martínez - Expected to be fine Martinez (thumb) is expected to be fine following his removal from Sunday's start against the Rockies, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Impact Martinez was diagnosed with a bruised right thumb after leaving Sunday's contest, and manager Mike Shildt said Monday that the 29-year-old's thumb just got jammed, and the team wanted the swelling to subside. Whether he's able to make his next start remains to be seen, but he appears to have avoided a serious injury. If he's cleared to pitch, the right-hander tentatively lines up to take the mound on the road against the Cubs on Saturday.

Kodi Whitley - Strong pair of rehab efforts Whitley (back) has fired a pair of perfect innings during which he's recorded four strikeouts in his last two rehab appearances for Double-A Springfield.
Impact The recovering right-hander was bounced around badly in his first rehab appearance Tuesday, but he regrouped nicely during his subsequent pair of outings Friday and Sunday. Given that he's been on the injured list from over a month at this point, it's possible the Cardinals opt to afford Whitley at least one appearance at Triple-A Memphis before they take the step of activating him.

Brandon Waddell - So far, so good with Cardinals Waddell, who fired 1.2 scoreless innings during which he allowed a hit and a walk while recording a strikeout in a loss to the Rockies on Sunday, has scoreless efforts in each of h...
Impact The left-hander got a fresh start with the Cardinals after so-so tenures with the Twins and Orioles to begin the season, and he's been effective over the small sample of 2.2 frames in St. Louis. Waddell had only 3.1 innings of big-league experience coming into the season, so while his handedness makes him a potentially valuable matchup-based asset for manager Mike Shildt, his exposure to high-leverage scenarios will likely be limited early.

Justin Miller - Gets hold in team debut Miller, just claimed off waivers from the Nationals on Saturday, fired a scoreless sixth inning during which he issued a walk and recorded a strikeout during a loss to the Rockies...
Impact The veteran right-hander got a crack at one of his old clubs in his first taste of game action with the Cardinals and came through with a solid frame. Miller has proven a serviceable middle-relief piece in past stops, and he projects to continue handling relatively low-leverage assignments in St. Louis that will likely limit his fantasy utility outside of very deep formats.
