Impact Manaea turned in the longest outing yet for an Athletics starter this spring, throwing a total of 57 pitches, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. The left-hander got first-pitch strikes on 11 of the 17 batters he faced and put 35 of his offerings into the strike zone overall, noting afterwards that he was particularly pleased with his fastball command despite the pitch regularly sitting between 88 and 90 mph during his outing, which is markedly slower than his 92.2 mph average velocity last season.

In Manaea's first outing of spring training, he allowed five hits, five earned runs and one walk with one strikeout in 1.1 innings. Over a career-high 179.1 innings in 2021, Manaea's sinker velocity averaged 92.1 mph, which was the highest since 2016 (92.9 mph). With that increased velocity, the sinker elicited a career-best 10.7% SwStr%, plus two other pitches with double-digit SwStr% in the changeup (16.5%) and slider (11.7%).

Impact Manaea has been struggling of late and has given up nine runs across his last two starts (10 innings), but the lack of effectiveness on the mound isn't anything new -- he has given up three or more runs in six of his last nine appearances since the beginning of August. Impact Manaea wasn't particularly sharp, though the only extra-base hit he surrendered was a solo home run by Salvador Perez.
