Kevin Newman - Cleared for rehab assignment Newman (groin/hamstring) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports.

Impact Newman is one of three injured Pirates position players who will kick off his rehab assignment at Indianapolis this week, with first baseman/designated hitter Yoshi Tsutsugo (back) and infielder Josh VanMeter (finger) set to join him. Prior to landing on the injured list, both Newman and VanMeter were holding down regular roles in the middle infield, but both could have to settle for reserve duties upon their respective returns. Top prospect Oneil Cruz was called up from Indianapolis on Monday and should serve as the Pirates' everyday shortstop moving forward, likely leaving Newman and VanMeter to vie for time at the keystone with a pair of rookies -- Diego Castillo and Tucupita Marcano (illness) -- once they're activated from the IL.

Yoshi Tsutsugo - Beginning rehab assignment Tuesday Tsutsugo (back) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports.

Impact Tsutsugo is one of three injured Pirates position players who will kick off his rehab assignment at Indianapolis this week, with infielders Kevin Newman (groin/hamstring) and Josh VanMeter (finger) set to join him. Sidelined since May 26 with a lumbar muscle strain, Tsutsugo could unseat either Michael Chavis or Daniel Vogelbach for regular starts at first base or designated hitter once he's cleared to return from the 10-day injured list.

Impact Crawford will get a breather after he hit .233 with two doubles, five RBI and a run over the last nine games. Thairo Estrada is taking over at shortstop while Wilmer Flores starts at second base.

Impact Wynns will take a seat after starting each of the past three games at either catcher or designated hitter while going 0-for-6 with a walk. Now that top backstop Curt Casali is more than a week removed from the hamstring issue that cost him a few games, Wynns should see his opportunities dwindle moving forward.

Joc Pederson - On bench against left-hander Pederson isn't in the lineup for Monday's game against Atlanta, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Impact Pederson went 4-for-14 with a homer, three runs, three RBI, two walks and six strikeouts over the last five matchups but will be out of the lineup for the second time in the last three games since left-hander Max Fried is on the mound. Luis Gonzalez, Austin Slater and Mike Yastrzemski will start in the outfield from left to right.

Cal Mitchell - Heads to bench Monday Mitchell is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Cubs.

Impact Mitchell will give way to the newly recalled Bligh Madris in the corner outfield Monday after starting in each of the previous four games while going 2-for-13 at the plate. Since receiving a promotion of his own from Triple-A Indianapolis on May 24, Mitchell has managed a pedestrian .205/.244/.356 slash line through 78 plate appearances. That level of production probably doesn't give Mitchell much security in an everyday role, and Madris could quickly usurp him on the depth chart if he capitalizes on his initial opportunities in the big leagues.
