Padres pregame: First Giants series; Nick Martinez set for debut Padres arrive in San Francisco for start of a three-game series against Giants team that won MLB-best 107 games in 2021

C.J. Abrams - On bench Monday Abrams will sit Monday against the Giants.
Impact Abrams has now been on the bench for three of the Padres' first five games, but the way he's been used is arguably encouraging for his future playing time. He's started at shortstop against both righties the Padres have faced, while Ha-Seong Kim has started against all three lefties, including Monday's starter Alex Wood. Once the Padres start facing a more standard split of righties and lefties, Abrams' playing time should increase.

Corbin Martin - Working in long relief Martin gave up three runs (one earned) on two hits and two walks while striking out five in four innings of relief Sunday against the Padres.
Impact Caleb Smith gave up five runs (four earned) in just one inning, so Martin came in behind him to log bulk innings. The Diamondbacks opted to open the year with Martin in the bullpen, but he is relatively stretched out, so he could be used as a spot starter when needed.

Ryne Nelson - Missing bats at Triple-A Nelson, who opened the year at Triple-A Reno, has allowed just two runs while striking out 13 in eight innings.
Impact One of Arizona's top pitching prospects, Nelson could make his big-league debut this summer. He has allowed eight hits and surrendered one home run while issuing just one walk through two starts.

Jordan Lawlar - Showing power, speed at Low-A Lawlar, who opened the year at Low-A Visalia, is hitting .357 with one home run, one steal on two attempts and a 6:1 K:BB in 14 at-bats.
Impact He is making up for lost time after a shoulder injury limited him to just two games in rookie ball last year. Lawlar is already showing off his power/speed upside through three full-season games, but it's worth keeping an eye on his strikeout rate in the early going.

Zac Gallen - Dealing with small cut on thumb Gallen will be pushed back in the rotation by a few days due to a small cut on his thumb, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.
Impact The Diamondbacks didn't initially provide a reason for scratching Gallen from his scheduled start Tuesday against the Astros, but he's apparently dealing with a minor thumb injury. Madison Bumgarner will now start Tuesday, while Merrill Kelly will take the mound Wednesday. In spite of Gallen's minor delay, he's expected to start at some point during the team's weekend series against the Mets.
