Opening season on IL
The Angels placed Bachman on the 15-day injured list Wednesday due to an unspecified injury.
Impact
Though the team hasn't provided word on the nature of Bachman's injury, the right-hander could be dealing with shoulder issues again after previously undergoing surgery in October 2023. He tossed just 61.2 total innings over three minor-league stops in 2024, and though he was expected to get stretched out for a starting role in spring training, he never ended up making any Cactus League appearances. Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register previously reported March 8 that Bachman experienced discomfort while trying to throw early in camp, prompting the Angels to shut him down due to what the 25-year-old vaguely described as "inflammation." With no reports suggesting that Bachman has resumed throwing over the past three weeks, he could be headed for an extended absence to begin the season.

Will be a starter in camp
Angels general manager Perry Minasian said Monday that Bachman will be stretched out as a starter during spring training, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Bachman was limited to just 16 starts and 61.2 innings -- all in the minors -- in 2024 after recovering from right shoulder surgery. He also accumulated only 43.1 frames in 2023 because of shoulder problems, and all 11 of his appearances in the majors came in relief. However, the Angels still want to develop the righty as a rotation option, with a shift to the bullpen down the line possible. Bachman is likely to begin the 2025 campaign back in the minors.

Undergoes shoulder surgery
Bachman recently underwent cleanup surgery on his right shoulder, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
Impact
The belief is that he will be ready for the beginning of spring training next February. Bachman, 24, posted an encouraging 3.18 ERA with 14 strikeouts over his first 17 major-league innings this season for the Angels before being shut down in mid-July due to nagging shoulder issues.

Shut down from throwing program
Angels manager Phil Nevin said Sept. 2 that Bachman had his throwing program shut down due to a setback with his inflamed right shoulder, MLB.com reports.
Impact
Bachman had been shut down coming out of the All-Star break due to the shoulder issue before being cleared to throw at some point in August. Nevin noted that the Angels had been eyeing a mid-September return for Bachman, but the 23-year-old right-hander now appears poised to finish the 2023 campaign on the shelf in light of his recent shutdown. The skipper said that he isn't "too alarmed" about Bachman's injury, so the expectation is that he'll be a full participant for spring training.

Moved to 60-day IL
Bachman (shoulder) was transferred from the 15-day to the 60-day injured list early in the week, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
Impact
Bachman was diagnosed with right shoulder inflammation in mid-July and was subsequently placed on the 15-day IL. Per MLB.com, the rookie right-hander had not yet resumed throwing at the time he was moved to the 60-day IL on Aug. 1. Bachman will now be out of action until at least mid-September.

Notches first big-league save
Bachman earned a save against the Royals on Friday, striking out two batters in two perfect innings.
Impact
Patrick Sandoval held KC scoreless over seven frames, and Bachman continued the shutout by retiring all three batters he faced in the eighth. Rather than turn to closer Carlos Estevez, who walked all three batters he faced the previous night, Angels manager Phil Nevin allowed Bachman to finish things out in the ninth with Los Angeles holding a 3-0 lead. The rookie succeeded with ease, retiring the side in order on 14 pitches. Bachman has allowed just one run over 12 innings as a major-leaguer thus far, though his 10:8 K:BB suggests he's benefitted from some good fortune. Nonetheless, he may be moving up in the bullpen pecking order given his propensity for keeping runs off the board so far.

Scoops up win in relief
Bachman was credited with his first MLB win in Monday's 9-6 victory over the Rangers in 12 innings after striking out one while giving up one hit and walking one in two scoreless f...
Impact
The Angels likely aren't ready to pull the plug on developing Bachman as a starter, but he's quickly become an integral member of the bullpen since being called up from Double-A Rocket City in late May for his MLB debut. In six outings in relief, Bachman has compiled a 0.90 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 8:8 K:BB in 10 innings. The poor WHIP and strikeout-to-walk ratio are warning signs that Bachman may be pitching over his head, but he could end up seeing more opportunities in higher-leverage spots nonetheless while the Angels are without two key late-innings arms in Ben Joyce (elbow) and Matt Moore (oblique).

Fans four in big-league debut
Bachman tossed two innings against Miami on Friday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks while striking out four batters.
Impact
It was a mixed bag for Bachman in his first major-league outing -- he threw just 26 of 47 pitches for a strike and allowed three baserunners in each of his two frames, though the Marlins posted only one run on him. The right-hander also impressed with four punchouts while throwing his fastball in the high-90s. Bachman started in all 23 of his minor-league appearances after being a first-round draft pick by the Angels in 2021, but he's expected to work out of the bullpen during his initial stint in the majors.
