INJURIES

Handed start Tuesday The Giants confirmed Long as their starting pitcher for Tuesday's game against the Mets, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Impact After being called up ahead of Sunday's game in Oakland, Long wasn't needed in relief, so he'll step into the rotation spot vacated by Anthony DeSclafani (ankle), who was moved to the injured list last weekend. Since the Giants are hopeful DeSclafani's injury is only a short-term concern, Long may only make one turn through the rotation, regardless of how he performs Tuesday. In his other eight outings (four starts) with the big club this season, Long has posted a 5.72 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 31:10 K:BB in 28.1 innings.

Summoned from Triple-A The Giants recalled Long from Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday.
Impact Long will be available out of the bullpen for Sunday's series finale in Oakland, but if he goes unused, he could step into the rotation Tuesday against the Mets as a replacement for Anthony DeSclafani (ankle), who was placed on the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move. Over eight appearances (four starts) with the big club this season, Long has gone 1-1 with a 5.27 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 31:10 K:BB in 28.1 innings.
AUGUST 22, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Returns to Triple-A The Giants optioned Long to Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday.
Impact After Johnny Cueto (elbow) was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday, Long was summoned from Triple-A to fill in his spot in the rotation Saturday. Because he had been working out of the bullpen in his recent outings at Sacramento, Long didn't work deep into Saturday's 4-1 loss to the Rockies, covering two innings while giving up one run on two hits and one walk while striking out four. It's unclear if he'll be stretched back out for starting duty, but with Cueto in line for a brief stay on the IL, the Giants likely won't have an immediate need for Long in any case.
AUGUST 15, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Whiffs four over two innings Long allowed one earned run on two hits and one walk while striking out four across two innings in the loss to the Rockies on Saturday. He did not factor into the decision.
Impact Long only pitched two innings before being relieved by Zack Littell. He allowed a solo home run to C.J. Cron in the second inning. The 25-year-old has just one appearance where he didn't allow a run this season. His ERA is 5.72 with a 1.27 WHIP and 31 punchouts in 28.1 innings.
AUGUST 15, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Called up ahead of start Long was recalled Saturday and will start against the Rockies.
Impact Long hasn't been particularly good in three starts and four relief appearances at the major-league level this season, struggling to a 5.81 ERA, though his 23.5 percent strikeout rate and 7.8 percent walk rate are both perfectly fine marks. Jay Jackson landed on the COVID-10 injured list in a corresponding move.
AUGUST 14, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Sent down Saturday Long was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Impact Long tossed two scoreless innings in his return from the 10-day injured list Wednesday, but he'll be sent to the minors after he gave up three runs (two earned) on a hit and a walk in a third of an inning Friday. His demotion will make room in the bullpen for Tony Watson, who was acquired via trade Friday.
JULY 31, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Two scoreless innings in return Long allowed two hits and a walk with two strikeouts across two innings in Wednesday's 8-0 loss to the Dodgers.
Impact Long worked as a starter prior to a back strain that landed him on the injured list. He returned to a bullpen role Wednesday and delivered decent pitching in the fifth and sixth innings. The 26-year-old doesn't have a clear path back to the rotation without injuries arising, so he should be expected to provide multiple innings in relief going forward. He's pitched to a 5.19 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 27:8 K:BB through 26 innings this year.
JULY 29, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Returns from injured list Long (back) was activated from the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact Long has been on the shelf about three weeks with a back strain and will rejoin the active roster after covering one inning during a rehab appearance in the minors. The 26-year-old was working as a starter prior to the injury, but he'll be available out of the bullpen with San Francisco's rotation currently in good health.
JULY 28, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Tosses live batting practice Long (back) threw a 30-pitch live batting practice session Thursday, Amy Gutierrez of the Giants' official site reports.
Impact Long threw a bullpen session Friday and has now taken the next step towards his return to the mound. He'll likely have to continue to ramp up his workload prior to being activated, though it's unclear if that will require a rehab assignment.
JULY 23, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Throwing bullpen Friday Long (back) will throw a bullpen session Friday, Amy Gutierrez of the Giants' official site reports.
Impact Long has been on the injured list since July 4 due to a mild lower-back strain, but he was able to resume mound work following the All-Star break. It's not yet clear when the southpaw could return or whether he could require a rehab assignment at some point.

JULY 6, 2021 • SFCHRONICLE.COM
Placed on injured list Long was placed on the 10-day injured list due to a mild low back strain Monday, retroactive to July 4, Mark W. Sanchez of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports.
Impact Long gave up four runs in four innings during Saturday's win over Arizona, but he didn't factor into the decision. The southpaw's injury may have contributed to his struggles, and he'll now be sidelined through the All-Star break. The Giants haven't announced who could take Long's place in the rotation, but the team could simply push their weekend starters up a day following Thursday's scheduled day off. It's not yet clear when the 25-year-old will be able to return to action, but catcher Chadwick Tromp was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move.
JULY 5, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Surrenders four in four innings Long went four innings during Saturday's 6-5 victory over Arizona, allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk with six strikeouts. He didn't factor into the decision.
Impact Long was able to endure the game's first two innings unscathed but surrendered two runs apiece in the third and fourth frames and was removed with 84 pitches. This was the lefty's fifth start, and while he's allowed four runs or less in each outing he's averaging less than five innings per start.

Takes loss in Bay Area series Long (1-1) was tagged with the loss Sunday against Oakland after allowing four runs on four hits and three walks across five innings. He fanned three.
Impact Long was unable to repeat what he had accomplished in his previous start against the Phillies, when he logged his first quality start of the season. Long has made just four starts this season and owns a rather unimpressive 4.95 ERA, though his 8.6 K/9 and 2.7 BB/9 are showing some promise considering he's made just two starts and four appearances at the big-league level. If he stays in the rotation, his next start should come this weekend on the road against Arizona.

Earns first MLB win Long (1-0) allowed two runs on four hits and a walk over six innings Sunday, striking out six and earning a win over the Phillies.
Impact Long made his first career start Sunday and turned in a strong performance to pick up a memorable victory. The only damage against him was a two-run blast by J.T. Realmuto in the third inning, but his offense provided plenty of run support. The 25-year-old rookie owns a 4.20 ERA and a 16:3 K:BB through 15 innings this season. Long could get another turn in the rotation next weekend at home against Oakland.

Earns starting nod Long will start Sunday's game against the Phillies, Mark W. Sanchez of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports.
Impact The lefty will make his first big-league start after pitching two long-relief outings. Manager Gabe Kapler said Long, who figures to fill the fifth spot in San Francisco's rotation, "has really earned the opportunity."
JUNE 19, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Works five innings Long allowed four runs on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts in five innings versus Arizona on Tuesday. He did not factor in the decision.
Impact Long worked behind opener Zack Littell on Tuesday, but it was Long who recorded the first out for San Francisco's pitching staff. The 25-year-old wasn't very effective while on the mound, but he was not in line for a decision. Long threw 65 pitches (46 strikes) in the outing. He could continue to work behind an opener going forward, and he lines up to pitch again in some capacity this weekend versus Philadelphia.
JUNE 16, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Working behind opener again Long is expected to serve as the Giants' primary pitcher behind opener Zack Littell in Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks, Mark W. Sanchez of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports.
Impact In his major-league debut June 9 in Texas, Long excelled while working behind Littell. After Littell exited following a scoreless first inning, Long permitted only one run on one hit and one walk while striking out seven over four frames. Since Long didn't cover more than four innings in any of his six minor-league outings prior to his call-up last week, the Giants likely won't ask him to work much longer Tuesday than he did in his MLB debut. Even so, Long will still be the Giants pitcher most likely to factor into any decision against Arizona.
JUNE 15, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Contract officially selected Long's contract was selected by the Giants on Wednesday, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Impact Long will make his major-league debut Wednesday against the Rangers, but he's expected to serve as the primary pitcher behind opener Zack Little. However, the southpaw is expected to take the rotation spot that had been occupied by Logan Webb (shoulder). Long made six appearances (three starts) in the minors to begin the year, and he posted a 1.99 ERA and 0.79 WHIP in 22.2 innings.
JUNE 9, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Working behind opener Wednesday Long is expected to serve as the Giants' primary pitcher behind opener Zack Littell in Wednesday's game in Texas, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
Impact Though he won't technically start in his MLB debut, Long is expected to slide into the rotation spot previously occupied by Logan Webb (shoulder), who moved to the injured list last week. After joining the Giants on a minor-league deal in free agency this offseason, the 25-year-old Long has quickly established himself as an intriguing prospect thus far during the minor-league season. Through six outings between Double-A Richmond and Triple-A Sacramento, Long has posted a 1.99 ERA and 37:5 K:BB in 22.2 innings while holding opposing hitters to a .165 average.
