INJURIES

Tosses three scoreless innings Long allowed a hit and a walk while striking out three over three scoreless innings during Sunday's 13-4 loss to the White Sox.
Impact Long covered the most outs of the six pitchers the Giants used Sunday. He allowed a three-run double to Gavin Sheets in the fifth inning after taking over for Sean Hjelle, but Long was otherwise strong in his longest outing since June 15. The southpaw has yet to cover more than three innings in a major-league outing this year, and he threw 31 of 45 pitches for strikes Sunday. Long has a 1.80 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 18:8 K:BB through 17 appearances (five starts). He could be a candidate to join the Giants' rotation at least until Jakob Junis (hamstring) is activated after Anthony DeSclafani (ankle) was ruled out for the remainder of the season Sunday. Manager Gabe Kapler hasn't officially disclosed the Giants' pitching plans for the next time the fifth starter's spot comes up in the rotation.
JULY 4, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Works out of bullpen Sunday Long struck out one and allowed an earned run on three hits over 1.2 innings of relief in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Pirates.
Impact After making a three-inning start Wednesday against the Royals, Long moved to the bullpen and came on in relief of starter Alex Cobb on three days' rest. The Giants' decision to make Long available out of the bullpen suggests that the team anticipates Anthony DeSclafani (ankle) returning from the 60-day injured list during the upcoming week to replace Long as its No. 5 starter.
JUNE 20, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Works three innings Long allowed two runs (none earned) on three hits while striking out two and walking none Wednesday against the Royals. He did not factor into the decision.
Impact Long hasn't been fully stretched out as a starter and was working on three days of rest. Therefore, it wasn't a surprise that he was pulled after just 44 pitches. Long allowed a single and double in the first inning, but would have worked out of the jam if not for an error by Brandon Crawford. Long has served as both a reliever and starter this season, though he has yet to work more than three innings in any of his appearances. He has maintained a 1.69 ERA with a 13:7 K:BB across 21.1 innings on the campaign.
JUNE 16, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Starting Wednesday Long is starting Wednesday's game against the Royals, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
Impact Long drew a start against the Dodgers on Saturday and allowed three hits and no walks while striking out one in three scoreless innings. The southpaw was pulled after throwing just 48 pitches, and he'll pitch on three days' rest during Wednesday's series finale against the Royals. Over 12 appearances (four starts) in 2022, Long has posted a 1.96 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in 18.1 innings.
JUNE 15, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Tosses three scoreless frames Long threw three scoreless innings against the Dodgers on Saturday, allowing three hits while striking out one batter. He didn't factor in the decision.
Impact Long was making a spot start in place of Alex Cobb (neck), and he was able to give San Francisco a season-high 48 pitches. The left-hander didn't allow any extra-base hits, limiting Los Angeles to a single in each of his three innings. It's unclear if Long will get another chance to start or if he will return to the bullpen. Of his 12 major-league appearances this season, eight have been as a reliever.
JUNE 12, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Making spot start Saturday Long will start Saturday's game versus the Dodgers, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
Impact With Alex Cobb (neck) out, the Giants have elected to give Long a start rather than cobble together another bullpen game. Long will only be on three days' rest after his longest outing of the season Tuesday versus the Rockies (three innings), so it doesn't seem likely he'll qualify for the win. The southpaw has a 2.35 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 10:7 K:BB through 15.1 innings in 11 appearances (three starts) this year.
JUNE 11, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Back with big-league club Long was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday.
Impact The 26-year-old was sent to Sacramento on Friday but will rejoin the Giants with Alex Cobb (neck) headed to the injured list. Long has started three games for San Francisco this season but has covered only 12.1 frames in 10 appearances, and he's not fully stretched out as a starter, The team has yet to announce who will fill Cobb's spot in the rotation, but Long is likely to be considered.
JUNE 7, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Optioned to Triple-A Long was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Friday, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports.
Impact After being recalled Wednesday, Long tossed two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and a walk while striking out a batter Thursday versus the Marlins. He'll now return to Sacramento as Sean Hjelle makes his way to the big leagues.
JUNE 3, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Recalled by San Francisco Long was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday.
Impact Long was sent to the minors in early May, and he posted a 4.91 ERA and 1.55 WHIP in 7.1 innings over five relief appearances in Sacramento. He's made nine appearances (three starts) for the Giants this year and should take on a bullpen role during his current stint with the major-league club.
JUNE 1, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Sent to Triple-A Long was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Friday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
Impact He had a 3.48 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and eight strikeouts in 10.1 innings through nine appearances. Sean Hjelle was promoted to take a spot in the big-league bullpen.
MAY 6, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Yields lone run in loss Long (0-1) took the loss Wednesday versus the Athletics, allowing one run on one hit with a strikeout in one inning.
Impact Long was the opener Wednesday, and he allowed a leadoff home run to Chad Pinder. That ended up being the game's lone run, with the Giants mustering just three hits in the contest. This was the first time Long's given up a run this season -- he owns a 1.35 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 6:1 K:BB while making three of his six appearances as an opener. He isn't likely to be needed in that role this weekend versus the Nationals, so Long's next appearance should be expected to be in relief.
APRIL 28, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Opening Wednesday Long will start Wednesday's game against the A's, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Impact Long opened Monday's game in Milwaukee and delivered a scoreless frame, and he'll start again Wednesday versus Oakland. The left-hander should cover an inning or two depending on how he pitches, with Jakob Junis the likely candidate to work behind him in a bulk role.
APRIL 27, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Tosses clean frame Long allowed one hit and struck out one in one scoreless inning Monday night against Milwaukee. He didn't factor into the decision.
Impact Long did his job as the opener, escaping the first inning without any damage after allowing an infield single to Christian Yelich. Long has fared well in the opener role, hurling three scoreless frames in two opportunities. The southpaw has yet to allow a run through 5.2 innings, striking out five and walking one over that stretch.
APRIL 26, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Starting Monday Long will start Monday's game against the Brewers, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact Long served as an opener in Friday's win over Washington and tossed two scoreless frames. He hasn't yet allowed a run in 4.2 innings this year, and he'll draw the start in Monday's matchup while Carlos Rodon takes the mound Tuesday.
APRIL 24, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Strong outing as opener Long fired two scoreless innings in Friday's win over Washington. He allowed two hits and struck out one batter.
Impact Long coughed up two hits in the first inning but escaped the jam without allowing a run. The 6-foot-1 lefty has yet to give up a run this season while posting a 4:1 K:BB through 4.2 frames. He's currently lined up to take the mound at home against Oakland next week where he'll likely go deeper into the contest.
APRIL 23, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Draws spot start Long is scheduled to start Friday's series opener with the Nationals in Washington, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact Since Long will be returning to the mound on two days' rest and hasn't recorded more than four outs in any of his appearances this season or during spring training, he'll likely be on a very limited pitch count in his first start. The southpaw will be slotting in as the fifth starter temporarily after Alex Cobb went on the injured list Wednesday with a right adductor strain. The Giants are hoping Cobb will be ready to go by the time his next turn in the rotation comes up at the end of the month.
APRIL 22, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Struggles in spring Long has allowed five runs on six hits and two walks with seven strikeouts across 4.2 innings in three Cactus League games.
Impact Long made a solid impression Monday versus the Athletics with a perfect inning. He's been hit by the long ball, allowing two home runs in his three appearances. The southpaw is still viewed as a starter by the Giants, but it's possible he could serve as a multi-inning reliever early in the season -- the five-man rotation is locked in but will still need to stretch out in the first few weeks.
APRIL 5, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Returns to Triple-A The Giants optioned Long to Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday.
Impact He'll head back to the minors after a two-day stint with the big club, during which he didn't appear in a game. The Giants called up reliever Jay Jackson from Triple-A in a corresponding move.
OCTOBER 3, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Called up Friday Long was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Friday.
Impact Long has been utilized as a starter and a reliever across his 12 major-league appearances, but he should pitch out of the bullpen during the final series of the regular season. During his first major-league season, the southpaw has recorded a 5.53 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in 40.2 innings.
OCTOBER 1, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Returns to minors Long was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Impact Long was promoted from Triple-A on Thursday and will return there after delivering 1.1 scoreless frames in his lone appearances. Alex Wood (illness) was activated from the injured list in a corresponding move.
SEPTEMBER 18, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Recalled by Giants Long was recalled by the Giants on Thursday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
Impact Long has made five starts and six relief appearances at the big-league level this season, posting an unimpressive 5.72 ERA. He'll likely serve as a low-leverage relief option for now. Jay Jackson was optioned to open a spot for Long's return.
SEPTEMBER 16, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Sent to Triple-A Long was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Impact Long allowed two runs (one earned) on a hit and two walks during Saturday's loss to the Dodgers, and he'll head to the minors in favor of a fresh bullpen arm. The 26-year-old has a 5.72 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, and 38:15 K:BB across 39.1 major-league innings this season.
SEPTEMBER 5, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Works in tandem with DeSclafani Long covered 4.2 innings of long relief and took a no-decision in Sunday's 9-0 loss to Atlanta. He gave up six runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three.
Impact After Anthony DeSclafani (ankle) was cleared to return from the 10-day injured list to start Sunday's contest, Long was expected to transition into a multi-inning role out of the bullpen. While that sort of role could still be in the forecast for Long during the final month of the season, he was deployed as a piggyback starter Sunday with the Giants deliberately limiting DeSclafani's workload in his first start coming off the injury. DeSclafani covered three innings (64 pitches) against Atlanta, but he should be in line to handle a more traditional starting role when his next turn comes up next weekend against the Dodgers. With that in mind, Long shouldn't be counted on to see this sort of workload out of the bullpen moving forward.

AUGUST 25, 2021 • MLB.COM
Scoreless outing against Mets Long (2-1) allowed three hits and one walk while striking out four across 5.1 innings to earn the win Tuesday against the Mets.
Impact Long turned in his longest outing since June 20 after being given a few weeks to ramp up at Triple-A Sacramento. Filling in for the rotation spot of Anthony DeSclafani (ankle), Long pounded the strike zone for 19 called strikes and was the beneficiary of strong run support. Despite the effective outing, Long may not have the chance for another turn through the rotation as DeSclafani, Johnny Cueto (elbow) and Kevin Gausman (illness) are all expected to return imminently.
