Turns in quality start Nelson allowed two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out one over 6.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Giants on Monday.
Impact Aside from the lack of strikeouts, it was a strong showing for Nelson following his five-run mess against the Cardinals a week ago. The right-hander had quality starts in three of his six outings in July, though he continues to mix in fairly equal shares of good and bad performances. For the season, he's at a 4.84 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 75:36 K:BB through 119 innings over 22 starts. Nelson is projected for a road start in Minnesota this weekend.

Surrenders five runs Nelson allowed five runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out one over six innings in a no-decision versus the Cardinals on Monday.
Impact Nelson has had three good starts and two poor ones in July, with Monday's outing falling in the latter category. The right-hander was at least efficient, needing just 87 pitches (56 strikes) to get through six frames. He's now at a mediocre 4.97 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 74:33 K:BB through 112.1 innings over 21 starts this season, though he's shown little consistency from one outing to the next. He's projected for a home start versus the Mariners over the weekend.

Stifles Atlanta in victory Nelson (6-5) earned the win over Atlanta on Wednesday, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out five batters over seven innings.
Impact Nelson didn't overpower the intimidating Atlanta offense, as he tallied just seven whiffs and five punchouts. However, the right-hander was efficient and effective during his seven frames, throwing 52 of 84 pitches for a strike and issuing just one walk. Two of the three hits against him left the park, but each was a solo shot, allowing Nelson to minimize the damage. He's gone seven or more innings in three of his past five outings, notching a quality start and a win in each of the three lengthy appearances. Nelson's 4.82 ERA on the campaign is far from spectacular, but it's partly the result of a handful of blow-ups, and he's given up two or fewer earned runs in nine of his 20 outings overall.

Impact The right-hander fell one out short of his sixth quality start of the season, getting lifted after 97 pitches (62 strikes), but despite the stingy outing Nelson was on the hook for his sixth loss of the year before Arizona managed to tie things up in the top of the seventh inning. Toronto then erupted for five runs in the bottom of the frame to put the game out of reach. Nelson has a mediocre 4.46 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 31:11 K:BB through 42.1 innings since the beginning of June, and his rotation spot could be in jeopardy if the Diamondbacks get aggressive at the trade deadline.
JULY 15, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Struggles versus Mets Nelson (5-5) allowed seven runs on nine hits and struck out just one over three innings to take the loss Thursday against the Mets.
Impact Nelson gave up two-run home runs to Pete Alonso and Francisco Alvarez in the short start. Prior to Thursday, Nelson had allowed a combined 10 runs over his last four starts, spanning 23.1 innings. The poor outing vaulted his ERA to 5.19 with a 1.43 WHIP and 65:29 K:BB through 93.2 innings to close out the first half. The Diamondbacks will be on the road for their first two series out of the All-Star break, so Nelson's next start is likely to be either in Toronto or Atlanta.

Twirls gem Saturday Nelson (5-4) allowed a run on three hits and a walk while striking out six over 7.1 innings to earn the win Saturday over the Angels.
Impact Nelson gave up a solo home run to Anthony Rendon, but the Diamondbacks were able to take the lead in the sixth inning. After plenty of ups and downs early on, Nelson has turned in a pair of impressive starts in his last two outings, limiting the Angels and Giants to a combined two runs, six hits and three walks over 14.1 innings. The 25-year-old trimmed his ERA to 4.67 with a 1.38 WHIP and 64:29 K:BB through 90.2 innings over 17 starts. It remains to be seen if he can sustain his recent success, which he'll attempt to do in a projected home start versus the Mets next week.

Earns fourth win Nelson (4-4) allowed one run on three hits and two walks over seven innings Sunday, striking out six and earning a win over the Giants.
Impact Nelson worked through five scoreless frames before the Giants finally broke through in the sixth inning. He completed more than six innings for the first time this year while forcing a season-best 13 whiffs. Nelson has allowed fewer than two runs in four of his last eight starts, posting a 3.80 ERA during that span. For the season, he lowered his ERA to 4.97 with a 58:28 K:BB through 83.1 frames. Nelson's next outing is projected to be a road matchup against the Angels.

No-decision in Milwaukee Nelson didn't factor in the decision Tuesday against the Brewers after he allowed three runs on six hits and no walks across five innings. He struck out six.
Impact The 25-year-old was in line for the victory when he exited after the fifth inning, but the bullpen fell apart in Milwaukee's four-run seventh. Nelson tied his season high with six strikeouts and didn't issue a walk for the fourth time in 15 starts this year. He has a 5.31 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 52:26 K:BB over 76.1 innings and tentatively lines up to make his next start this weekend in San Francisco.

May be bumped from rotation Manager Torey Lovullo did not commit to Nelson making his next scheduled start, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.
Impact Nelson allowed 10 hits and five earned runs across four innings and took the loss in Thursday's game against the Phillies. He has had inconsistent results this season and has particularly struggled with walks of late, giving up 15 free passes across his last 31.2 innings while striking out only 20. It's unclear who the team would tab to take his place, though Drey Jameson has pitched in long relief -- he threw 2.1 scoreless innings Thursday -- and Brandon Pfaadt could get a second chance in the big-league rotation.

Blanks Tigers in win Nelson (3-3) earned the win Saturday, allowing four hits and two walks over 5.2 scoreless innings against the Tigers. He struck out four.
Impact It was mostly smooth sailing for Nelson through the first five innings as Arizona's offense provided him with solid run support early. However, he was relieved by Austin Adams in the sixth after issuing back-to-back walks to load the bases, though the latter was able to get out of the jam unscathed. Nelson, who threw a season-high 98 pitches Saturday, has now won two of his last three starts, while it was the second time this season in which he didn't allow a run.
JUNE 11, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Struggles against Atlanta Nelson (2-3) took the loss Saturday versus Atlanta, allowing three runs on six hits and four walks with no strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
Impact Nelson's four walks matched his season high, and he needed 98 pitches (64 strikes) to get 14 outs. This was always going to be a tough matchup, and the silver lining is that he didn't get shelled. The 25-year-old is now at a 5.40 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 37:22 K:BB through 61.2 innings through 12 starts this season. Nelson is lined up for a more favorable road start in Detroit his next time out.
JUNE 4, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Picks up second win Nelson (2-2) earned the win over Colorado on Monday, allowing five runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out one batter over five innings.
Impact Nelson was far from impressive Monday, as he struck out only one batter and notched just three whiffs. To his credit, he managed to hang around for five frames after giving up four runs over the first two innings, and an Arizona offensive surge put him in line for his first win in his last nine outings. Nelson had allowed just one run and four hits over his past 11.1 frames coming into the contest, but his overall 5.37 ERA on the campaign makes him a risky start in fantasy.
MAY 30, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Quality start in Tuesday's win Nelson didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Phillies, allowing one run on three hits over six innings. He struck out four without walking a batter.
Impact The right-hander was sharp once again, firing 56 of 82 pitches for strikes as he delivered his third quality start in 10 outings. Nelson's given up two earned runs or less in three of his four trips to the mound in May, posting a 3.00 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 17:6 K:BB through 21 innings. He'll look to keep rolling in his next start, likely to come at home early next week against the Rockies.

Impact Nelson delivered his best outing of the season Wednesday. He didn't allow a run for the first time this year, and he posted a season-high six strikeouts. He did run into some control problems in the sixth inning, as he walked the bases loaded. Luis Frias came on in relief and recorded two outs to strand the bases loaded and preserve Nelson's ERA, which sits at 5.48 this season.

Turns in shaky outing Nelson did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk over 4.2 innings against San Francisco. He struck out four.
Impact Nelson was lucky to get run support in this one, as his performance let a lot to be desired. The right-hander has now allowed multiple runs in seven of eight outing this year. What's more, the 25-year-old has a 6.20 ERA to start off the year, so he should not be viewed as a legitimate at this current moment.
MAY 13, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Decent in no-decision Nelson allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk while striking out three over five innings versus the Nationals on Sunday. He did not factor in the decision.
Impact Nelson faded in the fifth inning, allowing a pair of runs, but Arizona regained the lead in their half of the frame. He would be denied the win when Miguel Castro blew the save in the ninth. This was the first time Nelson had allowed fewer than four runs in his last four starts. He has a rough 6.00 ERA and 1.53 WHIP with a 22:10 K:BB through 36 innings over seven starts this season. The 25-year-old is projected for a home start versus the Giants during next weekend's four-game set.
MAY 8, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Roughed up by Rockies Nelson (1-2) took the loss Sunday, allowing six runs on nine hits and one walk over four innings against Colorado. He struck out two.
Impact Nelson struggled with the conditions at Coors Field, giving up three extra-base hits in four innings of action including a three-run shot by C.J. Cron in the third inning. Considering Nelson has failed to eclipse four strikeouts in a start this season while also giving up five home runs in six starts, he remains an unsavory fantasy option. However, Nelson should have a better chance for success in his next start, which is tentatively scheduled to come against the Nationals.
MAY 1, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Hit hard in loss Nelson (1-1) was handed his first loss of the season Tuesday against the Royals, allowing four runs on 11 hits while striking out three over five innings.
Impact Nelson gave up a season-high 11 hits but was able to keep the ball in the yard after allowing at least one home run in three of his past four starts. The Royals got on the board in the first, fourth and fifth innings with RBI singles and scored their fourth run against Nelson on a sacrifice fly. A positive for the 25-year-old is that he didn't issue a walk after he exhibited command issues his last time on the mound. Nelson has yet to show great consistency in the early going and will carry a 5.33 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and a 17:8 K:BB over 27 innings into his next start.

Has worst start of season Nelson did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing five runs on three hits and three walks over five innings against the Padres. He struck out four.
Impact Nelson's five runs allowed were the most he's given up across his four starts this year. The right-hander is tentatively slated to face the Royals at home in his next appearance.
