Prepared for 30+ starts
Nelson focused on getting physically stronger this offseason so that he can handle the rigors of 30 or more starts in 2026, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Nelson, who bounced between the rotation and bullpen the last three seasons, threw a career-high 154.0 innings in 2025. His first 10 appearances were out of the bullpen, before he shifted to the rotation in late May when Corbin Burnes required Tommy John elbow surgery. With Burnes projected out until at least the second half of 2026, Nelson enters spring training with a guaranteed spot in the rotation, per general manager Mike Hazen. With that in mind, the right-hander added muscle and shed body fat during the offseason. Nelson, who has relied heavily on his fastball, also worked on his slider and curveball -- both pitches showed promise in 2025. The goal is to throw those pitches because he believes and trusts in them, and not because he has to use them.

Racks up season-high nine punchouts
Nelson allowed three runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out nine batters over six innings in a no-decision against the Dodgers on Wednesday.
Impact
Nelson got off to a rough start when Shohei Ohtani led off the game with a triple and Mookie Betts brought him home on a sacrifice fly. However, the right-hander did pretty well thereafter, giving up just two more runs (on a homer by Andy Pages in the fourth inning). Nelson thus notched his sixth quality start over his past seven outings and also set a new season-high mark with nine strikeouts. Nelson has been a bit of a revelation this year -- if this was his final regular-season appearance, he'll finish with a 3.39 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 132:41 K:BB over 154 innings spanning 33 outings (23 starts).

Goes five innings in no-decision
Nelson allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out one over five innings in a no-decision versus the Phillies on Friday.
Impact
Nelson's streak of five straight quality starts came to a close, though it wasn't a poor outing that ended the hot stretch. He wasn't particularly efficient Friday, throwing 59 of 95 pitches for strikes, and Arizona's offense didn't offer any support after plating two runs in the first inning. Nelson is now at a 3.34 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 123:41 K:BB across 148 innings through 32 appearances (22 starts). Nelson will look to stay steady in his final start of the regular season, tentatively scheduled to come at home versus the Dodgers next week.

No-decision in quality start
Nelson did not factor into the decision in Saturday's extra-inning win over the Twins. He allowed four hits and three walks while striking out four across six scoreless innings.
Impact
Nelson got off to a slow start by allowing four hits to the first six batters he faced, but he got out of a bases-loaded jam in the second inning and kept the Twins off the board. He generated 11 whiffs on 90 pitches (56 strikes) and was in line for his eighth win of the season, but he had to settle for the no-decision after the Twins tied the game at 2-2 in the eighth. Nelson has logged a quality start in each of his last five outings (though he has just one win to show for it), and the 27-year-old right-hander has 2.92 ERA and 1.04 WHIP across 64.2 innings in 11 starts since the All-Star break. His next start is tentatively slated for next weekend at home against the Phillies.
