Impact The Rays hadn't yet announced a starter for the second game of their series against Boston. Yarbrough has struggled considerably in three starts against the Red Sox this season, allowing 16 earned runs on 18 hits, four of which have been home runs, in 12 innings.

Impact Despite not missing many bats, Yarbrough wasn't hit hard as he didn't allow any extra-base hits. His performance made it surprising that he was pulled after only 55 pitches, especially considering he had thrown 70 and completed five innings in his previous outing. Assuming he is allowed to work deeper into his next appearance, Yarbrough has shown some positive signs by not allowing any home runs across nine frames since being activated from the injured list Aug. 18. For the season, he has a 4.57 ERA with a 101:23 K:BB across 128 innings.

Impact Making his return from the COVID-19 injured list, Yarbrough worked as a primary pitcher out of the bullpen behind Louis Head, and the arrangement proved to be favorable. According to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, Yarbrough said prior to being activated that he didn't feel 100 percent after he contracted the virus despite being vaccinated, but that didn't prevent the southpaw from excelling in his first game back. Yarbrough tossed 70 pitches Wednesday and should be able to push his count closer to the 80-to-90 range in his next outing, regardless of whether he's deployed as a traditional starter or bulk reliever.
