LEADING OFF: Seaver tributes, Clevinger debuts for Padres

Tributes will certainly pour in for Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver, a day after the New York Mets announced his death at 75

Picking up Thursday's start Manager Luis Rojas said Gsellman will start Thursday's game against the Yankees, Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News reports.
Impact David Peterson would have been available to start Thursday on five days' rest, but Rojas said the rookie would move to the bullpen for at least the next few days, allowing Gsellman to receive another turn through the rotation. In order to ensure his starting role becomes a permanent one, Gsellman will likely need to have a better showing than he turned in against this same Yankees squad his last time out Aug. 28. He covered four innings in the start, giving up three runs on four hits and three walks.
SEPTEMBER 2, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Solid in abbreviated start Gsellman started and worked four innings but didn't factor into the decision Saturday in a 2-1 loss to the Yankees. He gave up a run on four hits while striking out four.
Impact Gsellman was making his third straight turn through the rotation for the Mets, but since he's still in the process of building up after having worked exclusively out of the bullpen the past two seasons, he wasn't able to go very deep into the start. The right-hander was pulled after tossing a season-high 57 pitches, and he was generally solid over his four frames, with his lone mistake being the first-inning solo shot he surrendered to Luke Voit. The Mets have recently returned two other starters (Michael Wacha and David Peterson) from the injured list, so it's unclear if Gsellman will still have a spot in the rotation next week.

Candidate to start Thursday Gsellman is a candidate to start Thursday against the Marlins, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
Impact Gsellman hasn't pitched since Aug. 17 due to postponements tied to the COVID-19 pandemic. If he does get the ball first Thursday, the right-hander likely won't pitch deep into the game as he's still building up to a starter's workload. Across three outings this season, Gsellman has struck out four batters and allowed four runs on eight hits and two walks across 4.2 innings.
AUGUST 26, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Quick exit from Monday's start Gsellman lasted only 1.2 innings during Monday's start against the Marlins, allowing one run on three hits and two walks. He struck out one.
Impact The Mets ended up winning 11-4, but Gsellman had no part in the decision. The right-hander did get stretched out to 47 pitches (27 strikes), but if he can't improve his efficiency, it'll be a long time before he's ready to qualify for a win no matter how much run support he gets. Gsellman's next start is scheduled for Saturday at home against the Yankees, but expect another early exit.

LEADING OFF: Reds wait for virus test results before return

The Cincinnati Reds will wait for their latest COVID-19 test results to see when they can resume the season
AUGUST 17, 2020 • Associated Press
Next start coming Monday Gsellman is slated to start Monday's game against the Marlins in Miami, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
Impact Gsellman was thrust into a starting role last week after injuries to Jacob deGrom (neck) and Michael Wacha (shoulder) along with Marcus Stroman's decision to opt out of the season put further strain on an already-thin Mets rotation. Since he was making his first MLB start since 2017, Gsellman was capped at two innings (33 pitches) in the start against Washington, during which he served up three runs on four hits. Despite the poor showing, Gsellman still seems to have greater short-term security in the rotation than the struggling Steven Matz, whom manager Luis Rojas wouldn't commit to giving another start. Gsellman will likely face limited pitch counts for at least his next two outings as he builds up to a starter's workload, so he probably won't warrant an immediate pickup outside of NL-only leagues.

Gives up three runs in two innings Gsellman allowed three runs on four hits over two innings in a no-decision against the Nationals on Wednesday. He struck out one batter.
Impact Juan Soto tagged Gsellman for a three-run homer in the first inning, though the Mets did even more damage against opposing starter Anibal Sanchez in the bottom of the frame. Gsellman was making his first start since 2017 and will have to build up on the job after missing the start of the season with a triceps injury, with the Mets down several pitchers in the starting rotation. He threw only 33 pitches Wednesday.

Robert Gsellman will start tonight for the Mets The team intends to stretch him out and use him as a starter going forward.
AUGUST 12, 2020 • AMAZINAVENUE.COM
Enters starting rotation Gsellman will start Wednesday against Washington and will be stretched out as a starter moving forward, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
Impact The Mets needed another starter after Michael Wacha landed on the injured list with shoulder inflammation Sunday. Gsellman has 29 career big-league starts under his belt, though the last one of those came back in 2017. He has a lifetime 4.60 ERA in 156.2 innings as a starter, slightly worse than his 4.25 mark in 152.1 frames in relief. While the Mets will stretch him out going forward, it's unlikely that he'll be able to pitch particularly deep in Wednesday's contest, given that he threw just a single inning in his lone appearance this season after missing the start of the year with triceps tightness.

Officially placed on IL Gsellman (triceps) was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
Impact The move was anticipated after Gsellman was shut down from throwing last week with right triceps tightness. The issue doesn't sound too serious, but the team will choose to allow him time to recover rather than rushing him out to begin the season. Gsellman made 52 appearances for the Mets last year, posting a 4.66 ERA and 60:23 K:BB over 63.2 innings.
