Sent down to Triple-A The Orioles optioned Martin to Triple-A Norfolk on Monday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

Impact After dropping its 18th straight game Sunday, Baltimore has elected to shake up its infield in effort to end the losing streak. The Orioles designated third baseman Maikel Franco for assignment and optioned Martin, who had started the last five games at shortstop while Ramon Urias had been seeing more frequent action at the hot corner in place of the struggling Franco. Though Martin came through with a pair of base hits in Sunday's 3-1 loss to Atlanta, the 26-year-old has struggled mightily since returning from the 60-day injured list Aug. 3, slashing .227/.271/.318 in 15 games.

Impact Though Martin is getting his 10th start in 13 games, he still appears to be behind Ramon Urias and Jorge Mateo for primary duties at either second base or shortstop. The ability of Mateo and Urias to play additional spots in the infield and/or outfield should at least continue to free up semi-regular work for Martin, so long as he hits well enough to warrant the playing time. Through his first 10 games with the big club this season, Martin is slashing .233/.294/.367 with one home run, four RBI and four runs.

Impact The 26-year-old didn't get much on his first homer of the year, which traveled an estimated 320 feet around Fenway Park's Pesky Pole. Hardly known for his power -- he has seven homers in 128 career big-league games -- Martin accounted for Baltimore's only run. He's gone just 5-for-23 (.217) in eight contests since coming off the IL, although he could get a longer look at shortstop if Ramon Urias (upper leg) continues to miss time.

Reinstated from 60-day IL Martin (wrist) was reinstated from the 60-day injured list Monday.

Impact Martin missed the entire 2020 campaign after he underwent wrist surgery in July, and he suffered another wrist injury in mid-May that kept him sidelined for just over two months. However, the 26-year-old recently appeared in five rehab games and went 4-for-16 with a home run, a double, six runs, four stolen bases and two RBI. He'll rejoin the major-league roster as an option in the middle infield after Domingo Leyba was sent down as part of a move Monday.
