INJURIES

Struck by comebacker, exits early Vasquez was removed from his start Friday against the Red Sox after getting hit in the right forearm by a comebacker, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Impact Vasquez took a 98 mph line drive off his forearm during the fifth inning of Friday's contest, and he was taken out of the game after conferring with a trainer. He'll be sent for imaging, and the Padres should have an update on the severity of his injury in the near future. The 25-year-old righty had allowed one earned run on five hits and a walk while striking out one batter over four innings before being taken out of the game.

Remains in rotation Vasquez is scheduled to start Thursday's game against the Diamondbacks at Petco Park, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact Neither Yu Darvish (groin) nor Joe Musgrove (elbow) is eligible to return from the 15-day injured list until next weekend, so Vasquez will unsurprisingly stick around in the San Diego rotation for another turn. After being called up from Triple-A El Paso, Vasquez started in last Saturday's win over the Royals, giving up three runs on four hits and one walk while striking out five in five innings. He maintains a 5.74 ERA and 1.61 WHIP over 26.2 innings in six starts for the big club on the season.
JUNE 5, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Optioned to Triple-A Vasquez was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday.
Impact Vasquez will head back to the minors after making three straight starts with the Padres. His big-league spot will go to Joe Musgrove (elbow) who's being activated from the 15-day injured list. In those three starts, Vasquez went 0-2 with a 5.79 ERA in 14.0 innings.

Gets no run support in loss Vasquez (0-3) took the loss against Atlanta in the second game of a doubleheader Monday, allowing three runs on 10 hits and no walks while striking out two batters over six innings...
Impact Vasquez yielded a season-high 10 hits, but he still managed his first quality start of the campaign. In fact, this was the first time through five starts that he's been able to complete more than five frames. The right-hander was by no means impressive with just two punchouts, but he did manage to keep the Padres in the contest, though San Diego's offense was unable to provide any runs in support. Vasquez has posted a mediocre 5.82 ERA and 1.75 WHIP through 21.2 innings, and he could be moved out of the rotation -- and potentially off the big-league roster -- with Joe Musgrove (elbow) slated to return from the injured list Tuesday.

Back in majors The Padres recalled Vasquez from Triple-A El Paso on Sunday.
Impact The right-hander was optioned to El Paso on April 26 after making a couple starts for San Diego, and he'll rejoin the big club Sunday since Joe Musgrove (elbow) landed on the injured list. Vasquez allowed five earned runs with a 5:3 K:BB over 7.2 frames in his two outings and could step into the rotation for Musgrove, who had been scheduled to pitch Tuesday against the Cubs.
MAY 5, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Draws second start Vasquez is scheduled to start Thursday's game against the Rockies at Coors Field.
Impact Though Vasquez had struggled over his three starts with Triple-A El Paso prior to being called up Saturday, he held his own in his 2024 MLB debut, limiting the Blue Jays to one earned run on four hits and one walk while striking out three over five innings in a losing effort. With Yu Darvish (neck) set to miss at least one more turn through the rotation while he's on the injured list, Vasquez will benefit from another start with the Padres.
APRIL 21, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Dealt loss in season debut Vasquez (0-1) took the loss Saturday against the Blue Jays after he allowed four runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk over five innings. He struck out three.
Impact The right-hander was called up for his season debut and surrendered a three-run homer to Daulton Varsho in the opening inning, though none of the runs were earned due to an error earlier in the frame. Toronto also scratched a run across in the second, but Vasquez then pitched through the fifth inning with no further damage. San Diego doesn't have a scheduled off day until May 2, so Vasquez could stick in the starting rotation while Yu Darvish (neck) is on the 15-day injured list.
APRIL 21, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Takes step back in spring start Vasquez tossed 3.2 innings against Cincinnati in a Cactus League contest Wednesday, allowing five runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out three batters.
Impact Vasquez came into the outing having tossed two spring outings during which he allowed just one run on two hits and four walks with six punchouts over five frames. Wednesday's start was a step in the wrong direction, as the right hander served up five extra-base hits, including a trio of homers. Vasquez is in the running for one of two spots at the back of the Padres' rotation to begin the campaign, with Jhony Brito, Matt Waldron and Pedro Avila his primary competition. One thing going for Vasquez is that he had moderate success with the Yankees in his first taste of major-league action last year. Over 11 outings (including five starts), he posted a 2.87 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 33:18 K:BB over 37.2 innings.

Heads to SD in Soto deal The Yankees traded Vasquez, Michael King, Drew Thorpe, Jhony Brito and Kyle Higashioka to San Diego on Wednesday in exchange for Juan Soto and Trent Grisham, Jeff Passan of ESPN.co...
Impact Vasquez appeared in 11 games and made five starts for the Yankees in 2023, registering a 2.87 ERA and 1.27 WHIP across 37.2 innings. Interestingly, his numbers get worse in Triple-A (4.59 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, 80.1 IP), but the Padres' depleted rotation presents an opportunity for Vasquez to be a part of San Diego's Opening Day roster.
DECEMBER 7, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Optioned to Triple-A The Yankees optioned Vasquez to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday.
Impact Vasquez will end up as the Yankees' roster casualty as Frankie Montas (shoulder) returns from the 60-day injured list. Despite a lackluster season in Triple-A, the 24-year-old righty was solid out of the bullpen for the Yankees, posting a 2.87 ERA and 1.27 WHIP through 37.2 innings.
SEPTEMBER 30, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Works in long relief Vasquez struck out two and was charged with two earned runs on three hits and two walks over 2.1 innings out of the bullpen in Sunday's 7-1 loss to the Diamondbacks.
Impact Vasquez entered the rotation Sept. 12 to make a 3.2-inning start in Game 1 of a doubleheader in Boston, but he's made his subsequent two appearances out of the bullpen. The Yankees appear to have settled on Luke Weaver as their No. 5 starter over Vasquez and Jhony Brito, both of whom will likely continue to work in relief for the final week of the season.
SEPTEMBER 25, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Solid in no-decision Vasquez did not factor into the decision in a Yankees win during the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Red Sox, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk over 3.2...
Impact The 24-year-old blanked Boston for three innings before fading in the fourth, exiting after 60 pitches (40 strikes). Vasquez was working in a tandem with Jhony Brito, who would up getting the win, and the two rookie right-handers combined for what was effectively a quality start -- two earned runs over six innings between them. The duo's effectiveness could encourage the Yankees to keep them together in a rotation slot, neither one might be available when New York next needs a starter Saturday in Pittsburgh. Vasquez has a 2.67 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 25:14 K:BB through his first 30.1 big-league innings.
SEPTEMBER 13, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Gets start for Game 1 Vasquez will start the first game of the Yankees' doubleheader Tuesday in Boston.
Impact The doubleheader created a stretch of six games in five days for the Yankees, so Vasquez will at least temporarily step in to fill the void in the rotation. The Yankees will have a permanent spot available in the rotation after Luis Severino (oblique) was shut down for the season last week, with Vasquez and Jhony Brito representing the top options to replace Severino. Brito will presumably pick up a start later this week, and how he and Vasquez perform in their respective outings will likely determine which of the two ends up sticking around in a starting role when the rotation condenses to five men.
SEPTEMBER 12, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Candidate for starting role Yankees manager Aaron Boone mentioned Vasquez and Jhony Brito as possible replacements for Luis Severino (side) in the team's rotation, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
Impact Severino exited Friday's game against the Brewers with a left side injury, and he was placed on the 15-day IL on Saturday. That means New York now has a rotation spot to fill, and rookies Vasquez and Brito appear to be the leading candidates for the role. Vasquez has posted a solid 2.35 ERA and 1.16 WHIP over 26.2 innings this season, though his 22:13 K:BB isn't ideal. He's pitched twice in relief since being recalled from the minors Sept. 1 but was mostly used as a starter during earlier stints with the Yankees this season.
SEPTEMBER 9, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Summoned to majors Vasquez was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday.
Impact Vasquez is part of the Yankees' roster expansion as the calendar flips to September. He looks to be ticketed for relief work for now but is a candidate for some starts down the stretch.
SEPTEMBER 1, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Optioned to SWB The Yankees optioned Vasquez to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday.
Impact New York is off Thursday and again on Monday, so a thin rotation will suffice for the time being. Vasquez started Wednesday's game against Atlanta and allowed two earned runs on two hits and three walks over 3.1 innings as the Yanks fell 2-0.
AUGUST 17, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Takes loss in short start Vasquez (2-2) took the loss against Atlanta on Wednesday, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks while striking out three batters over 3.1 innings.
Impact After working in bulk relief in his previous outing, Vasquez got a traditional start Wednesday. The right-hander served up a two-run homer to Eddie Rosario in the second inning, which was enough to saddle him with the loss on a day when New York was shut out for the second straight game. Aside from the long ball, Vasquez gave up only one other hit, but he also walked three batters and needed 60 pitches to get through 3.1 frames. The Yankees' rotation is extremely thin right now with Nestor Cortes (shoulder) out at least another month, Carlos Rodon (hamstring) not eligible to return from the IL until next Tuesday and Domingo German (personal) out for the season, so Vasquez could be needed to fill a spot in the rotation -- either in bulk relief or as a traditional starter -- for the immediate future.
AUGUST 17, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Getting start in Atlanta Vasquez is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against Atlanta at Truist Park.
Impact In his return to the big leagues this past Friday, Vasquez was deployed in bulk relief behind opener Ian Hamilton and tossed 3.2 innings while striking out two and giving up two earned runs on three hits and one walk en route to claiming a win over the Marlins. Depending on how the first two games of the series in Atlanta shake out, the Yankees could end up deploying Vasquez behind an opener again, but in any case, the right-hander will be making another turn through the rotation. With both Frankie Montas (shoulder) and Domingo German (personal) likely out for the season and with Nestor Cortes (shoulder) recently joining Carlos Rodon (hamstring) on the injured list, Vasquez should have a clear path to an extended stay in the rotation.
AUGUST 14, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Picks up win in bulk relief Vasquez (2-1) registered the win against the Marlins on Friday, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk over 3.2 innings. He struck out two.
Impact Ian Hamilton opened for the Yankees and had a spotless first inning before faltering in the second. The team then turned to Vasquez, who permitted a two-out RBI double in the fourth inning and a leadoff homer to Josh Bell in the sixth. Vasquez has managed a 1.89 ERA through his first 19 major-league innings, although that's come with a 12:8 K:BB. He figures to receive additional chances with Carlos Rodon (hamstring) and Nestor Cortes (shoulder) out and Luis Severino struggling.
AUGUST 12, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Recalled from Triple-A The Yankees recalled Vasquez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday.
Impact The 24-year-old right-hander is lined up to work in bulk relief behind opener Ian Hamilton on Friday at Miami. Vasquez should wind up operating as more of a traditional starter down the stretch after the Yankees had to place Nestor Cortes (shoulder) back on the injured list.
AUGUST 11, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Expected to start Friday Vasquez is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre by the Yankees to start Friday in Miami, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
Impact The team hasn't announced anything yet, but they have an opening Friday and Vasquez is on turn. Vasquez holds a 1.17 ERA in three starts with the Yanks this season, although that's come with a 10:7 K:BB over 15.1 innings. If the 24-year-old pitches well Friday, he would seem to have a good shot to remain in the rotation at the expense of the struggling Luis Severino.
AUGUST 10, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Optioned to Triple-A The Yankees optioned Vasquez to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday.
Impact Vasquez was promoted Wednesday for a spot start against Baltimore, and will now head back to the minors immediately following the game. The 24-year-old righty threw five scoreless innings, surrendering three hits and three walks while only recording one strikeout. Vasquez now holds an impressive 1.17 ERA through 15.1 frames, but his 5.11 ERA in Triple-A tells a very different story on how his 2023 has been so far.
JULY 6, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Starting Wednesday Vasquez will start for the Yankees on Wednesday against the Orioles, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports.
Impact Vasquez has pitched well in two outings for the Bronx Bombers this season, holding a 1.74 ERA and 9:4 K:BB over 10.1 innings. The right-hander has a less impressive 5.11 ERA in 13 starts with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, though he's struck out well over a batter per frame there.
