INJURIES

Struggles in bulk relief Vasquez completed five relief innings against Cleveland on Saturday, allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out five batters in a no-decision.
Impact Vasquez was the Padres' third pitcher, following Wandy Peralta (one inning) and Kyle Hart (one inning). Vasquez had pitched well as a traditional starter in his previous two appearances, giving up just two runs over 11 combined frames, so it's unclear why he was transitioned back to bulk relief Saturday. Regardless, that decision didn't work out, as the right-hander yielded two runs in the fifth inning and another two in the seventh. It remains to be seen how Vasquez will be deployed moving forward, but he logged a starter's workload of 90 pitches Saturday, so he'll presumably remain on his regular rest schedule, which puts him on track to next take the mound next weekend at home against Minnesota.

Collects eighth win Vasquez (8-6) allowed two runs on two hits and struck out one without walking a batter over five innings to earn the win over the Astros on Sunday.
Impact Vasquez put just two runners on base, as he allowed a single to Taylor Trammell and a home run to Daulton Varsho in the second inning. Beyond that, it was another decent start for Vasquez, who has started his last two appearances. He's pitching to contact without getting burned for now -- he has just four strikeouts over his last 15.2 innings. On the year, he's maintained a 4.16 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 66:31 K:BB through 106 innings over 23 games (19 starts). Vasquez should get at least one more turn through the rotation while Nick Pivetta (forearm) and Joe Musgrove (elbow) work their way back. The next outing for Vasquez is projected to be on the road in Cleveland.

Starting Sunday Vasquez will start Sunday's matchup against the Astros on Sunday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact Vasquez will be called upon to make his 19th start of the season for Sunday's series finale against Houston. The 27-year-old started Tuesday against Arizona, recording six scoreless innings while striking out one. On the campaign, the right-hander owns a 7-6 record, 4.19 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 65:31 K:BB through 101 innings.

Excellent in win Vasquez (7-6) allowed two hits and a walk while striking out one over six scoreless innings to earn the win over the Diamondbacks on Tuesday.
Impact Vasquez has allowed just three runs over 17 innings across five games since he returned from an ankle bruise. The right-hander appears to have at least temporarily won a spot in the Padres' rotation -- JP Sears was optioned Tuesday, while Griffin Canning and German Marquez both made relief appearances in this contest. The Padres revitalized their rotation by acquiring Casey Mize and Robbie Ray ahead of the trade deadline, but Vasquez should start until Nick Pivetta (forearm) and Joe Musgrove (elbow) complete their rehab assignments. Vasquez is tentatively projected to make his next start at home versus the Astros if he remains in the rotation.

Will start Tuesday Vasquez will start Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact Vasquez will make his second start and fourth appearance since returning from the injured list July 19. The 27-year-old last appeared Friday against the Giants, logging 4.2 scoreless innings in relief. On the campaign, the right-hander owns a 4.45 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 64:30 K:BB in 95 innings.

Works in long relief Thursday Vasquez covered 4.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen in Thursday's 4-1 loss to the Giants, striking out a batter while allowing three hits and one walk.
Impact Vasquez started in his previous appearance last Saturday in Miami, but he served as more of an opener for that contest, working the first 2.2 innings before lefty JP Sears came on to cover the next 3.1 frames. The two essentially swapped roles Thursday, with Sears starting and yielding three earned runs over 3.2 innings before Vasquez entered in the top of the fifth to mop up. Sears and Vasquez may end up working in tandem again the next time the rotation spot comes up Tuesday in Arizona, though the makeup of the San Diego pitching staff could change leading up to Monday's trade deadline.

Starting Saturday Vasquez will start Saturday's game against the Marlins.
Impact Vasquez will be making his first start since returning from the injured list last weekend, but because he hasn't pitched more than three innings in a game since the beginning of July, he's more likely to act as an opener for JP Sears, who was originally in line to start Saturday's contest. Vasquez has been struggling heavily on the mound as of late, giving up 16 earned runs in just 13.1 frames across his last five appearances.

Works in bulk relief Sunday Vasquez was credited with a hold while striking out two and allowing three hits and no walks over three scoreless innings of relief in Sunday's 19-2 win over the Royals.
Impact After the Padres reinstated Vasquez from the 15-day injured list prior to Sunday's contest, the right-hander headed to the bullpen for the series finale in Kansas City in what marked just his second relief appearance in 18 outings on the season. The Padres essentially deployed Vasquez in tandem with starter German Marquez, who was lifted after tossing 59 pitches and allowing two earned runs over three innings. Beyond Michael King, the Padres have been unable to generate quality results from any of their rotation members this season, so it wouldn't be surprising if Vasquez's move to the bullpen ends up being short-lived. Even if he doesn't displace Marquez in the rotation the next time a fifth starter is needed Friday in Miami, Vasquez could still end up being used in a tandem arrangement with Marquez once again.

Reinstated from injured list San Diego reinstated Vasquez (ankle) from the 15-day IL on Sunday.
Impact Vasquez is back with San Diego after missing just 16 days with a bruised right ankle. In 17 games, the 27-year-old has recorded a 4.71 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 60:27 K:BB through 84 innings. The right-hander comes back to a Padres rotation that has been brutalized by injuries all season, with Lucas Giolito (elbow), Nick Pivetta (forearm), Joe Musgrove (elbow) and Yu Darvish (elbow) all out for extended periods. The Padres designated Ron Marinaccio for assignment in order to make room for Vasquez on the active roster.
