INJURIES

Slated for start Saturday Vasquez said Friday he'll be recalled from Triple-A El Paso to start Saturday's game against the Rockies, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact Vasquez will fill the gap in the Padres' rotation Saturday, marking his first big-league action since Aug. 15. The 26-year-old has a 3.96 ERA and a 59:49 K:BB in 111.1 innings spanning 23 appearances with the Padres this season. While he'll have to navigate pitching in Coors Field, Vasquez will have the advantage of facing a weak Rockies offense. With Michael King (knee) on the mend, Vasquez likely won't stick around in the Padres' rotation.

The 26-year-old has a 3.96 ERA and a 59:49 K:BB in 111.1 innings spanning 23 appearances with the Padres this season. Per Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune, Nestor Cortes (biceps) is headed to the 15-day injured list, which means Vasquez could stick in the rotation even after Michael King (knee) is activated, likely at some point during the upcoming week.

Sent back to Triple-A The Padres optioned Vasquez to Triple-A El Paso on Saturday.
Impact Vasquez was recalled from El Paso on Thursday and worked 3.2 innings in bulk relief against the Dodgers on Friday, allowing two runs on three hits with four strikeouts while taking the loss. The Padres have elected to return him to the minors one day later in order to make room on the 26-man roster for reliever Ron Marinaccio. Though Vasquez has pitched to an uninspiring 3.96 ERA and 1.38 WHIP over 111.1 big-league frames on the campaign, there's a good chance he'll be back up with San Diego at some point before the end of the season, especially if additional injuries hit the rotation. Michael King is already on the IL due to left knee inflammation, and it's unclear who will slide into his starting role now that Vasquez is in El Paso.

Takes loss in bulk-relief outing Vasquez (3-6) allowed two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out four over 3.2 innings to take the loss versus the Dodgers on Friday.
Impact Vasquez worked behind an opener in this tough matchup. It mostly worked well, aside from the Dodgers collecting a pair of runs in the third inning, which was enough to stick the right-hander with the loss. Vasquez had started his first 22 appearances of the year with middling results. He's now at a 3.96 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 59:49 K:BB over 111.1 innings. Michael King (knee) is back on the injured list, so it's likely Vasquez will get another turn or two through the rotation, though it remains to be seen if those outings will be as a traditional starter or as a bulk reliever. He's tentatively lined up for a home appearance versus the Giants next week.

Dodgers Tie Padres Atop NL West After Holding On In First Game of Series
Set to pitch Friday for Padres The Padres recalled Vasquez from Triple-A El Paso on Thursday, Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.com reports.
Impact The Padres added Michael King to the 15-day injured list due to left knee inflammation, so the Padres recalled Vasquez in a corresponding move. Vasquez will either start Friday or serve as the primary pitcher behind an opener. He made one start for Triple-A El Paso on Aug. 10 after he was optioned Aug. 3, but he gave up five runs across three innings of work.

Optioned to minors The Padres optioned Vasquez to Triple-A El Paso on Sunday.
Impact The 26-year-old righty took the loss Saturday against St. Louis after giving up five runs over four innings, and he'll lose his rotation spot with Nestor Cortes (elbow) coming off the injured list. Vasquez has been a decent back-end starter for San Diego this year with a 3.93 ERA, though his 1.39 WHIP and 55:48 K:BB have resulted in limited fantasy utility. He seems likely to be back with the Padres before the end of the season, whether it be as a starter or reliever.

Gives up five runs in loss Vasquez (3-5) was charged with the loss against the Cardinals on Saturday after surrendering five runs on eight hits and no walks across four innings. He struck out three.
Impact The right-hander was staked a 4-0 lead after three innings, but he allowed five runs across the fourth and fifth frames before being pulled. The performance ended a run of four straight starts allowing two runs or fewer, though Vasquez hasn't lasted five innings since July 4 and is without a victory in his past 13 outings. The right-hander's next start lines up for next weekend versus Boston, though he could be replaced in the rotation by Nestor Cortes (elbow).

Navigates through 4.2 frames Vasquez allowed one run on one hit and one walk while striking out two batters over 4.2 innings in a no-decision against St. Louis on Saturday.
Impact As usual, Vasquez was far from overpowering, notching just six whiffs and two punchouts. He was clinging to a 2-1 lead entering the fifth and retired the first two batters he faced, but manager Mike Shildt then decided to pull him in favor of Adrian Morejon, ending Vasquez's shot at a victory. It was the third straight start in which the right-hander has been yanked having completed fewer than five frames, though he hasn't given up more than two runs in any of those outings. That strategy has hampered Vasquez from getting into the win column, and he's now finished with a no-decision in 11 consecutive starts.

Allows just one despite no K's Vasquez worked 4.1 innings in a no-decision, allowing one run on seven hits and one walk while striking out none, during Monday's 2-1 win over the Marlins.
Impact Strikeouts have never been the name of the game for Vasquez, but this was the first start this season where he finished an entire outing without one. He was lifted after just 68 pitches, so there's clearly some trust to be gained between him and the staff to let the right-hander, who has pitched past the fifth inning only six times, work deeper into ballgames. That's part of the reason why the 26-year-old hasn't had a decision to his name since May 21, but that means no losses either, so he's certainly kept the Padres in ballgames and limited damage well despite often dealing with plenty of traffic in his starts. His turn in the rotation is next slated to come up on the road in St. Louis.
