Athletics suffer another blowout loss to Mariners The A’s couldn’t muster any offensive might and Paul Blackburn had a rare rough night.
Hit hard in Wednesday's loss Blackburn (6-3) took the loss Wednesday versus the Mariners. He allowed seven runs on 10 hits and two walks while striking out four in four-plus innings.
Impact Blackburn allowed runs in each of the first three innings and then ran into a bunch of trouble in the fifth without recording an out. This was easily the worst start of the season for the right-hander, as he gave up season highs in hits and runs. Despite the stumble, he still has a 2.97 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 55:19 K:BB across 75.2 innings overall. Blackburn is projected to face an even tougher challenge next week in New York versus the Yankees.

Impact Blackburn has righted the ship over his last two starts, and he earned his first win since May 25 during Thursday's 4-3 victory. The right-hander has a lackluster 17.9 percent strikeout rate over his first 13 starts of the season, but he's posted a 2.31 ERA and 1.01 WHIP that would be the best marks of his career if the season ended today. Blackburn tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Mariners on Wednesday.

Suffers first loss of 2022 Blackburn (5-1) was charged with the loss Monday after he pitched 6.2 innings, giving up four runs on five hits while striking out five versus the Astros.
Impact Blackburn surrendered a solo home run to Yordan Alvarez in the top of the fourth and then three more runs in the fifth including a two-run homer by Jose Altuve. The four runs given up were a season high for the right-hander and the home runs were the first he's allowed since May 3, raising his total surrendered to three on the year. He had better strike zone command Monday, not walking a batter for the first time in four starts. The difficult outing raised Blackburn's season numbers to a still impressive 2.15 ERA and 0.98 WHIP with 41 strikeouts over 54.1 innings. He tentatively lines up to pitch again Saturday against the Red Sox.

Impact It was a rough showing for the right-hander, who managed to get only 45 of 81 pitches over the plate before exiting, but Seattle couldn't take advantage of all the extra traffic on the basepaths.
