Wins rotation spot
Messick will begin the regular season in the Guardians' rotation, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
Impact
The race for the final spot came down to Messick and Logan Allen, and after the latter gave up a dozen runs in just 2.1 frames Friday, the Guardians decided to go with Messick. The 25-year-old southpaw performed well over seven starts during the late stages of the 2025 regular season, recording a 2.72 ERA and 1.31 WHIP alongside a 38:6 K:BB across 39.2 innings. His success has carried over into Cactus League play (3.60 ERA, 1.13 WHIP), though he gave up three solo home runs during his most recent spring outing.

Stung by homers
Messick allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out three over 5.2 innings in Thursday's spring start against Kansas City.
Impact
The positives are that Messick ran his pitch count to 87 (57 strikes), didn't walk a batter and pitched into the sixth inning for the first time this spring. Unfortunately, the left-hander was touched for three solo home runs in his fourth Cactus League appearance (third start). The left-hander entered the game with a 1.93 ERA and a strong case to be named the fifth starter. At this point, Messick and fellow left Logan Allen are competing for the final rotation spot. A roster projection posted Friday by Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal has Allen winning the job and Messick headed to Triple-A Columbus. While another roster projection posted Friday by Paul Hoynes and Joe Noga of the Cleveland Plain Dealer indicate it's still undecided. Each pitcher has minor league options remaining.

Strong effort Monday
Messick allowed two hits and one walk while striking out four over 4.2 scoreless innings in Monday's spring start against the Royals.
Impact
Messick was dominant in his third Cactus League outings (two starts), upping his pitch count to 66 (41 strikes) in a bid to earn a spot in the Guardians' rotation. The left-hander lowered his spring ERA to 1.93 over 9.1 innings. Cleveland's received good work from all its starters over the last week, and the decision will be tough one for manager Stephen Vogt. Messick has three minor-league options, which could work against him in the competition with Joey Cantillo (no options) and Logan Allen (one) for the final two spots in the rotation.

Tagged for three homers in loss
Messick (3-1) took the loss Thursday against the Tigers, giving up four runs on six hits and a walk while striking out seven over five innings.
Impact
Messick fell victim to the long ball throughout Thursday's outing, surrendering a leadoff homer to Jahmai Jones and another blast two batters later to Wenceel Perez before later giving up yet another solo shot to Riley Greene in the fourth. The barrage was uncharacteristic as the right-hander had allowed just one homer through his first six starts (34.2 innings). Messick has also failed to complete six innings in back-to-back outings after doing so in four of his first five. The loss was a costly one for Cleveland, as it pulled Detroit even with them atop the AL Central. The 24-year-old will finish the regular season with a 2.72 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 38:6 K:BB across 39.2 innings.

Fans nine, settles for no-decision
Messick didn't factor into the decision Friday against the Twins, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk in 5.1 innings. He struck out nine.
Impact
Messick appeared to be on his way to notching the win, but the Twins were able to scratch across a pair of runs in the sixth inning to tie the game. It was still a very promising showing by the rookie southpaw, who racked up a season high nine strikeouts and produced an impressive 18 whiffs. Messick has shown plenty of potential overall since being called up by Cleveland, turning in a 2.08 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 31:5 K:BB over 34.2 innings. His last outing of the regular season is set to come against the division-rival Tigers.
