Hit hard in loss Espino (0-2) took the loss Tuesday as the Nationals were routed 11-0 by the Phillies, giving up four runs on six hits and a walk over 3.2 innings. He struck out three.
Impact Four of the six hits off the right-hander went for extra bases, including two moon shots by Kyle Schwarber. Espino has served up six homers in five starts since joining the Nats' rotation in mid-June and has yet to last six innings in any of them, leading to a 4.91 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 17:7 K:BB through 22 innings in that role.

Allows four runs Espino allowed four runs on five hits and a walk while striking out four across 4.1 innings Wednesday against the Pirates. He did not factor into the decision.
Impact Espino allowed three of his four earned runs on the long ball, as he was taken deep by Bryan Reynolds and Daniel Vogelbach. He was otherwise fairly effective in keeping the Pirates' bats in check by recording six flyball outs. Espino has made four consecutive starts after beginning the season as a reliever. He's allowed eight earned runs across 18.1 innings in that span but has also served up four long balls.

Getting fourth start Wednesday Espino is listed as the Nationals' starting pitcher for Wednesday's home game against the Pirates.
Impact Unsurprisingly, Espino will make his fourth straight turn through the rotation after he worked a season-high 5.1 innings while giving up just one run his last time out Friday versus the Rangers. Through his first three starts, Espino has gone 0-1 with a 2.57 ERA and 1.29 WHIP across 14 frames.

Walks four in five innings Espino took a no-decision in the second game of Friday's doubleheader against the Phillies, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits and four walks across five innings while...
Impact Espino's second start of the year lasted longer than his first, but it wasn't particularly strong. He walked the first two batters of the game but escaped without allowing a run thanks to a pickoff by catcher Keibert Ruiz and a pair of strikeouts. He had much more trouble in the third innings, allowing a solo homer to Matt Vierling before Yairo Munoz scored on an error and Kyle Schwarber scored on a fielder's choice. The Nationals have a pair of off days next week, so it's not yet clear whether Espino will be needed in the rotation.

Remains in rotation Espino is scheduled to make his next start Friday in the second game of the Nationals' doubleheader with the Phillies, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.
Impact With Stephen Strasburg (ribs) recently moving back to the 15-day injured list, the Nationals are prepared to give Espino a trial in the rotation. After making his first 20 appearances of the season out of the bullpen, Espino picked up his first start last weekend against the Brewers. He covered 3.2 innings in that contest and gave up one run on four hits and no walks, but he should be able to work deeper into Friday's start.

Handed first loss Espino (0-1) allowed one run on four hits over 3.2 innings Sunday, striking out two and taking a loss against the Brewers.
Impact After making 20 appearances out of the bullpen this season, Sunday's outing was Espino's first start. He pitched well, throwing 34 of 53 pitches for strikes, but was hit with the loss due to the lack of run support from his offense. The 35-year-old is now sporting a 2.08 ERA with a 22:4 K:BB through 30.1 innings. Espino is currently lined up for another start at home next week against Philadelphia.

Starting Sunday Espino will start Sunday's game against Milwaukee, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact Espino was a starter in 19 of his 35 appearances last season but has pitched exclusively out of the bullpen this year. He's had plenty of success, with an excellent 3.8 percent walk rate offsetting a sub-par 19.0 percent strikeout rate, leading to a 2.03 ERA. He may find it hard to pitch deep enough to record a win Sunday, however, as he's topped out at three innings this season.

Ozuna, Albies power Braves' offense in 16-4 rout of Nats

Marcell Ozuna homered twice, Ozzie Albies drove in three runs and the Atlanta Braves fired up their offense to rout the Washington Nationals 16-4

Likely to begin season in bullpen Espino threw a simulated game Wednesday and has been stretching out for starting duty this spring, but he's expected to open the season as a long reliever for Washington, Mark Zuck...
Impact Washington is expected to be without Stephen Strasburg (neck) and Joe Ross (elbow) to begin the season, but unless the team loses any other projected rotation members to injury in the final week of spring training, Espino likely won't be in line for a starting role. When the Nationals' starting depth was challenged in 2021, Espino stepped in admirably and produced a 4.50 ERA over 86 innings in his 19 starts, but as a 35-year-old with a limited big-league track record prior to last year, he's not a high priority for Washington.
MARCH 30, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Start shortened by rain Espino yielded four runs on four hits and a walk with no strikeouts in two innings versus Colorado on Wednesday. He did not factor in the decision.
Impact Espino's start was cut short by a weather delay in Colorado, although he wasn't pitching all that well prior to the stoppage. The right-hander's biggest mistake was a three-run home run he allowed to Ryan McMahon in the first inning. Espino has a 4.27 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 92:25 K:BB through 109.2 innings, likely his final numbers this season despite the short start. He's done well enough to be considered for a spot in the rotation in 2022.
