INJURIES

Having solid spring Espino gave up one hit and struck out one over two scoreless innings in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Marlins
Impact The 36-year-old right-hander had posted good numbers this spring with a 1.13 ERA and 6:1 K:BB over eight frames, but he's worked mainly at the end of games and faced minor-league hitters -- he didn't enter Saturday's contest until the eighth inning. Despite the fact he's made 19 big-league starts in each of the last two seasons, Espino doesn't appear to be in consideration for the rotation opening created when Cade Cavalli (elbow) was lost to Tommy John surgery. He might begin the year in the bullpen if the Nationals feel they need an extra long-relief option, however.

Crushed in final outing of year Espino (0-9) couldn't escape the first frame in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Mets, surrendering seven runs on five hits -- including three home runs -- and...
Impact The 35-year-old right-hander saved his worst for last, giving up back-to-back-to-back homers to begin his final outing of the season. Espino helped hold an injury-wracked Nationals' rotation together down the stretch, but given his age and overall mediocre numbers, he likely won't factor into the team's 2023 plans other as an emergency depth option.

Remains winless Espino (0-8) took the loss Tuesday as the Nationals fell 8-2 to Atlanta, giving up four runs on five hits over five innings. He struck out five without walking a batter.
Impact The 35-year-old righty blanked Atlanta through three innings, but Espino got tagged for two runs in the fourth before serving up back-to-back homers to Orlando Arcia and Ronald Acuna in the fifth. Espino has a respectable 4.09 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 23:3 K:BB through 22 innings in September, but with MacKenzie Gore (elbow) set to join the rotation before the end of the year, it's not clear if he'll get one more chance to earn his first win of 2022.

Braves try to extend road win streak in matchup with the Nationals

The Atlanta Braves visit the Washington Nationals trying to extend a three-game road winning streak
SEPTEMBER 27, 2022 • Associated Press
Works four innings Espino allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out two across four innings Wednesday against Atlanta. He did not factor into the decision.
Impact Espino had worked out of the bullpen in each of his last three outings and completed only one inning on each occasion. Therefore, he was pulled after only 71 pitches in Wednesday's outing, though he effectively limited Atlanta's offense thanks to six groundball outs. It's unclear whether Espino will stick in the rotation to close the season, but he has a 4.17 ERA with an 87:22 K:BB across 108 frames for the campaign.

Set to start Wednesday Espino will start Wednesday's game against Atlanta, Paul Mancano of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact Espino has operated out of the bullpen the past couple weeks but will rejoin the starting rotation Wednesday, at least temporarily. The veteran right-hander has a 4.24 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 85:20 K:BB across 104 innings this season, and he could have a limited workload in Atlanta given he's covered only one frame in each of his past three outings.

Works in relief Espino allowed a run over one inning out of the bullpen during Wednesday's loss to the Orioles, and manager Dave Martinez said the right-hander will serve as a reliever for the tim...
Impact The 35-year-old made his last start Sept. 6 against the Cardinals and gave up three runs over five innings, and Wednesday was his second straight relief appearance. Espino has an 0-7 record this year, but he's been a solid swingman with a 4.28 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 82:20 K:BB across 103 innings. He could return to the rotation down the stretch but for now has shifted to the bullpen.

Analysis | Paolo Espino is nearing unwanted (and somewhat irrelevant) history Paolo Espino could join the list of pitchers who have thrown 100 or more innings in a season and not earned a win.

Shaky in no-decision Espino allowed three runs on three hits and four walks while striking out four over 4.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Padres on Friday.
Impact Espino matched a season high with four walks in this outing. He threw only 44 of 84 pitches for strikes, and he put two of the first three batters in the fifth inning on base before reliever Victor Arano allowed them to score on a Manny Machado double. Espino has allowed at least three runs in five of his last seven outings. He has a 4.31 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 65:19 K:BB through 85.2 innings across 33 appearances (13 starts). The right-hander is tentatively projected for a home start versus the Reds next week.
