Impact Pivetta missed nearly five months of MLB action and logged just three minor-league rehab appearances after landing on the IL in mid-April due to a right flexor strain, so his workload was limited to 63 pitches in his return. Nonetheless, the veteran righty was able to go deep enough to notch a victory, as he allowed the Nationals to put only two runners on base. Pivetta ended the outing on a high note by retiring the final seven batters he faced, and about the only detail that wasn't positive from a fantasy perspective is that he notched only two punchouts (and just one whiff). The Padres are battling for a wild-card spot in the NL, so the team doesn't figure to hold Pivetta back too much, though it's likely he'll need a few more starts to ramp up to a full workload. He's next scheduled to take the mound this weekend in San Francisco.

Impact Pivetta took a step up in competition Sunday after he made the first two starts of his latest minor-league rehab assignment with Single-A Elsinore. The right-hander had no trouble against the Triple-A competition, tossing 44 of 64 total pitches for strikes over his scoreless outing. Pivetta has been sidelined since April 14 while recovering from a right flexor strain and a subsequent setback with right elbow tightness in early August. The 33-year-old may require another start with El Paso, but the team has yet to announce what the future holds for Pivetta.

Impact After a three-week hiatus following a setback with his right forearm, Pivetta resumed his minor-league rehab assignment and made a second start with Lake Elsinore. Though his command was lacking while he allowed three extra-base hits -- including two home runs -- on the night, Pivetta was at least able to pound the strike zone (35 strikes on 47 pitches). Pivetta will need at least one more rehab start to continue building up his pitch count before the Padres consider bringing him back from the 60-day injured list and inserting him into the rotation. The veteran righty has been on the shelf since April 14.
