Returns from paternity leave Martinez was reinstated from the paternity list Monday.
Impact Martinez spent the weekend with his wife and newborn, but he has rejoined the Padres and will be available out of San Diego's bullpen moving forward. He figures to fill a key role in front of new closer Josh Hader.

Placed on paternity leave Martinez was placed on the paternity list Friday.
Impact He may miss the weekend series against the Twins while he attends to the birth of his child. Michel Baez was recalled from Triple-A El Paso to take Martinez's spot in the bullpen.

Picks up fourth save Martinez earned the save, allowing an unearned run on a hit while striking out one in the 10th inning of a 6-4 extra-inning win Tuesday in Detroit.
Impact Martinez received the save opportunity because Taylor Rogers blew the save in the ninth and the Padres plated three runs in the top half of the 10th. Martinez allowed a two-out double that scored the automatic runner but ended the game on the very next pitch when Willi Castro flew out to end the game. It was the fourth save of the season for Martinez with the other three coming as three-inning saves. The 31-year-old has done it all for the Padres this season, from starting to closing.
JULY 27, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Notches second hold Martinez earned a hold against the Mets on Friday with a perfect eighth inning of work.
Impact Yu Darvish gave the Padres a standout seven-inning start during which he allowed only one run, and Martinez continued that excellence by retiring all three batters he faced on 12 pitches in the eighth frame. The outing was the fourth straight in which Martinez has worked one inning or fewer after he went at least two frames in each of his first 16 appearances -- most of which came as a starter -- this season. With two holds in his past three relief outings, it appears that the right-hander is moving into more of a high-leverage role in the San Diego bullpen.
JULY 23, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Returns to action Friday Martinez (foot) picked up a hold against Arizona on Friday, allowing one hit in a scoreless inning of work.
Impact Martinez was hit on the right foot by a line drive Tuesday, but there was never any indication that he suffered a serious injury. The right-handed hurler didn't pitch Wednesday or Thursday, but he served as the bridge between Yu Darvish and Taylor Rogers and picked up a hold in the 5-3 victory over the Diamondbacks on Friday. The hold was Martinez's first of the season, and he has also notched three wins and three saves while posting a 3.63 ERA over 74.1 innings. He's made 10 starts and eight relief appearances.
JULY 16, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Struck by comebacker Martinez was removed from Tuesday's loss to the Rockies after being struck in the right foot by a line drive, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Impact Martinez allowed an unearned run on one hit with a strikeout and zero walks over one inning before being struck with the comebacker during the seventh inning. The right-hander should be considered day-to-day since the specifics of the injury remain unclear.
JULY 13, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Converts three-inning save Martinez allowed two runs on two hits and two walks with three strikeouts in three innings to earn the save in Friday's 6-3 win over the Giants.
Impact Martinez nearly got through the long-relief outing unscathed, but he allowed a two-out, two-run home run to Brandon Belt in the ninth inning. All three of Martinez's saves this year have seen him cover three frames, and they've all come in his last four appearances. He's unlikely to challenge Taylor Rogers' grasp on the closer role for more traditional save opportunities. Martinez has a 3.73 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 65:31 K:BB through 72.1 innings across 16 outings (10 starts), but he'll likely remain in a multi-inning role going forward.
JULY 9, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Picks up win Sunday Martinez (3-3) earned the win over the Dodgers on Sunday, pitching 2.1 scoreless innings during which he allowed one hit and struck out two batters.
Impact MacKenzie Gore held Los Angeles to one run over 5.2 frames, but he trailed 1-0 upon his exit in the sixth inning. Martinez retired the final batter in that frame and worked through the eighth, keeping the Dodgers off the scoreboard while allowing only two baserunners (on a single and a hit-by-pitch). The Padres finally broke through with four runs in the top of the ninth, handing Martinez his third victory of the campaign. Including Sunday's performance, the right-hander has allowed only one run over his past nine innings, and he has notched two saves and a win in three outings over that span.

Another three-inning save Martinez picked up the save Wednesday against the Diamondbacks. He allowed two hits and one walk without a strikeout over three scoreless innings.
Impact Martinez has earned his first two MLB saves in his last two appearances, both of the three-inning variety. While the right-hander's return stateside hasn't been overly impressive from a statistical standpoint, he can spot start for the club and mop up where necessary. The volume and team context keep him relevant in some deeper formats.

Impact The 31-year-old right-hander has been mostly effective for the Padres in a swing-man role this season, and that usage led to a rare three-inning save Wednesday in which he tossed 53 pitches (40 strikes). Martinez will carry a 3.94 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 60:28 K:BB through 64 innings into his next appearance, and with San Diego's rotation healthy at the moment, that appearance will likely come out of the bullpen.

Goes five innings in no-decision Martinez didn't factor into the decision during Saturday's 5-4 loss to Colorado, allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks with one strikeout in five innings.
Impact Martinez struggled with baserunners all game, putting multiple Rockies on in four of his five frames, but was able to escape with a no-decision as opposing starter German Marquez was equally mediocre. The one strikeout on five swinging strikes was a big disappointment as Martinez had averaged nearly six strikeouts per start over his last six turns. It's unclear if the 31-year-old will get another start soon as San Diego's vaunted rotation is finally fully healthy.

Impact Martinez was originally scheduled to start Sunday's contest, but he was moved up a day due to Mike Clevinger landing on the COVID-19 injured list. The late change didn't seem to bother Martinez at all, as he fell one out shy of a quality start and struck out a season-high nine batters. The right-hander didn't allow a run until the sixth inning, when Brendan Rodgers doubled home Charlie Blackmon to register the Rockies' only run of the game. Martinez hasn't earned any wins over his past five starts despite posting a 2.92 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 26:10 K:BB across 24.2 innings over that span.
JUNE 12, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Starting Saturday's opener Martinez will start Game 1 of Saturday''s doubleheader against the Rockies.
Impact Martinez was expected to take the ball Sunday, but he will instead do so a day earlier in place of Mike Clevinger, who landed on the COVID-19 Related injured list.
JUNE 11, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Set to start Sunday Martinez is scheduled to start Sunday's game against the Mets, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Impact The right-hander worked in long relief last weekend but will make a spot start Sunday since San Diego has a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday. Martinez threw 70 pitches over four innings during that relief outing and threw 93 pitches in his last start May 30, so he shouldn't face any notable workload restrictions as a spot starter.
JUNE 8, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Tosses four innings in long relief Martinez allowed two runs on four hits and no walks while striking out four batters over four-plus innings against Milwaukee on Sunday. He did not factor in the decision.
Impact Mike Clevinger started the game for the Padres, but he was held to three innings and 60 pitches as the team decided to limit his workload following a stint on the injured list. Martinez ended up throwing more pitches (70) than Clevinger, and he breezed through four scoreless frames before the Brewers broke through with two runs before he could retire a batter in the eighth. Clevinger figures to see his pitch count increase in his next start, but it's possible that Martinez could again be used to piggyback him if Clevinger is unable to take on a full workload.

Walks four in loss Martinez (2-3) allowed three runs on seven hits and four walks over six innings Monday, striking out two and taking a loss against the Cardinals.
Impact Martinez began the outing with a pair of scoreless frames before Nolan Gorman took him deep for a two-run shot in the third inning. He later allowed an RBI single to Tommy Edman in the fifth. Martinez has given up 10 runs over his last 19 innings (4.74 ERA) but Monday was his first loss since April 22. It's unclear if he'll get another turn in the rotation with Mike Clevinger (triceps) expected to return this week.

MAY 30, 2022
Tosses five innings in no-decision Martinez did not factor in the decision against Milwaukee on Monday, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out five over five innings.
Impact Martinez wasn't efficient in the contest, needing 106 pitches -- 69 of which were strikes -- to get through five frames. However, he held the Brewers without a run in all but one inning and came up big in the fourth when he got out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam without allowing any damage on the scoreboard. Martinez made the start due to an injury to Mike Clevinger, who went on the injured list Sunday with a triceps strain. Should San Diego opt to continue with a six-man rotation, Martinez will likely make his next start in St. Louis early next week.
