Thomas Szapucki - Could start Wednesday in San Fran The Mets are "leaning heavily" toward recalling Szapucki from Triple-A Syracuse to start Wednesday's game against the Giants, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
Impact Due to a doubleheader this past weekend in Colorado, the Mets will need to break a sixth starter into the rotation Wednesday, and Szapucki looks like the leading option to make a spot start. Arm injuries have slowed Szapucki's progression through the Mets' farm system since he was drafted in 2015, but he's been healthy and effective at Triple-A this season, submitting a 2.86 ERA and 1.32 WHIP while striking out 30 in 22 innings. If Szapucki does in fact get the call to start Wednesday, he'll most likely be sent back to Syracuse following the outing, but he could make a case to stick around as a back-end member of the rotation over Trevor Williams or David Peterson if he fares better than anticipated in what would be only his second MLB appearance.

David Peterson - Re-entering big-league rotation Peterson confirmed that he will be called up from Triple-A Syracuse to start Monday's game in San Francisco, Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News reports.
Impact Peterson's appointment to the rotation was fully expected after Max Scherzer landed on the 15-day injured list Saturday with a high-grade oblique strain that is expected to sideline him for 6-to-8 weeks. The 26-year-old lefty had already joined the Mets for the road trip as a member of the taxi squad once the news of Scherzer's injury broke, but New York will wait until Monday to formally recall Peterson from Triple-A. Peterson performed well in his first four outings (three starts) with the big club earlier this season, posting a 1.89 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 16:8 K:BB across 19 innings. Given the severity of Scherzer's injury, Peterson should have a decent amount of leash in the rotation as he rejoins the big club.

Eduardo Escobar - Rests Sunday Escobar is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rockies.
Impact Escobar is getting a breather after he started in both ends of Saturday's doubleheader in Colorado while going 1-for-6 with two walks and a run. Luis Guillorme will spell Escobar at third base.

Dominic Smith - Sitting against southpaw Smith is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rockies.
Impact Southpaw Austin Gomber is on the hill for the Rockies in the series finale, so the lefty-hitting Smith will head to the bench. J.D. Davis will serve as the Mets' designated hitter while Smith sits after going 0-for-5 with a run scored between both ends of Saturday's doubleheader.

Starling Marte - Sits after emotional home run Marte is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rockies.
Impact Marte will take a seat after he returned from the bereavement list Friday and proceeded to start in both ends of Saturday's doubleheader. The 33-year-old, who had been away from the Mets for several days following the death of his grandmother, returned to action in memorable fashion in Game 1 on Saturday, as he hit a home run in his first at-bat. Between the two contests, Marte went 3-for-9 with two RBI.

Charlie Blackmon - Rests after doubleheader Blackmon is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mets, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports.
Impact Blackmon will get a breather after he started in both ends of Saturday's doubleheader. The 35-year-old went 1-for-8 between the two games and saw his six-game hitting streak come to an end in Game 2 of the twin bill. With Blackmon on the bench Sunday, the Rockies will roll out an outfield of Kris Bryant, Yonathan Daza and Randal Grichuk from left to right.
