Max Kepler - Not in lineup Monday Kepler (knee) is out of the lineup for Monday's game against Atlanta.
Impact Kepler was a late scratch from the lineup ahead of Sunday's 3-2 loss to the Cardinals with a sore left knee and will miss out on a second straight start. Given that Atlanta is sending a tough lefty in Max Fried to the hill for the series opener, the lefty-hitting Kepler might have been excluded from the lineup even if he wasn't bothered by the knee.

Byron Buxton - Will require rehab assignment Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said Monday that Buxton (hip) is "getting closer" to a rehab assignment but is "not there yet," Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.
Impact Baldelli added that while Buxton's rehab assignment is expected to be brief, he will require one before being activated from the 10-day injured list. The outfielder hasn't played since Aug. 12 because of right hip inflammation and would seem to be at least a week or so away from rejoining the Twins' lineup.

Justin Topa - Resumes playing catch Topa (knee) has resumed playing catch, Bobby Nightengale of the Minnesota Star Tribune reports.
Impact Topa missed the first four months of the season due to a tear in the patellar tendon of his left knee. He began a rehab assignment July 23 but was shut down Aug. 10 due to right elbow inflammation. Topa remains optimistic that he can return this season, but he still likely has several weeks of building up his throwing even before he could start a rehab assignment.

Kody Funderburk - Throws bullpen session Funderburk (left oblique strain) threw a bullpen session Sunday, Bobby Nightengale of the Minnesota Star Tribune reports.
Impact Funderburk went on the 15-day injured list July 21. He's still likely a week or two away before he could start a rehab assignment, so it's not clear if he'll be able to return before the end of the regular season.

Jhoan Duran - Saddled with tough-luck loss Duran (6-7) took the loss Sunday, allowing two runs (zero earned) on three hits over one inning against the Cardinals. He struck out two.
Impact Duran appeared in his second-consecutive game after having not previously pitched since last Sunday. He should have gotten out of the inning unscathed with his 19th save in tow, but a one-out ground ball that could have resulted in a game-ending double play was thrown into left field by Edouard Julien, extending the inning. Two batters later, Lars Nootbaar connected on a two-out single that drove in two and saddled Duran with the tough-luck loss. On the positive side for Duran, while his K/9 rate is at a career-low 10.13, he's struck out multiple batters five times in his last seven outings, allowing just one earned run with a K/9 rate of 18.47 during that stretch.

Zebby Matthews - Continues to impress Matthews did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing one run on four hits over five innings against the Cardinals. He struck out seven.
Impact Matthews put together his best performance to date, allowing a career-best one run while striking out seven, which more than doubles the six punch outs he accumulated during his first two big-league starts. He held the Cardinals scoreless through four but a two-out solo homer by Victor Scott was the only blemish against his line. The rookie left-hander has now completed exactly five innings in each of his starts and has been effective in allowing a total of five earned runs. Matthews has earned the chance to remain in the rotation, with his next start scheduled to take place at home against the Blue Jays.
