Fans seven in no-decision
Meyer did not factor into the decision in Sunday's 3-2 win over Pittsburgh, pitching 5.2 innings while allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk. He struck out seven...
Impact
The 26-year-old right-hander looked solid in his first outing of the season, tossing 93 pitches and generating 12 whiffs, falling one out short of a quality start. After averaging 94.1 mph on his fastball in 2024, Meyer found an extra gear in this appearance, posting a 95.6 mph average on the pitch. The former first-round pick produced a solid 3.21 ERA with 11:2 K:BB across 14 innings in the Grapefruit League and looks poised for a year that matches his draft pedigree. Meyer currently lines up to make his second start at Atlanta next weekend.

Locked into rotation spot
Meyer threw a simulated game on a back field Thursday as the Marlins prepare him for a role in the Opening Day rotation, Chuck King of MLB.com reports. "Max has been terrific," man...
Impact
The young right-hander came into camp simply trying to win a rotation job, but since then Braxton Garrett (elbow), Edward Cabrera (finger) and Ryan Weathers (forearm) have all broken down, potentially positioning Meyer to start the second game of the season for the Marlins on March 28 against the Pirates. Meyer, the third overall pick in the 2020 First-Year Player Draft, has yet to put things together in the majors, posting a 5.86 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 52:21 K:BB in 63 IP, but he's looked good this spring with an 8:2 K:BB and zero homers allowed in nine Grapefruit League innings.

Favorite for fifth starter job
Meyer appears to be in the lead to win the fifth starter role to begin the season, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact
There's no big surprise here, as the 25-year-old right-hander's main competition for the job, Valente Bellozo, lacks his pedigree or raw stuff. Meyer is being brought along carefully in camp after throwing 115 innings last season between Triple-A and the majors in his return from Tommy John surgery, and through three innings so far over two Grapefruit League appearances, he has yet to allow a run with a 2:1 K:BB.

Reaches 97.7 mph in spring debut
Meyer topped out at 97.7 mph while completing a scoreless inning Wednesday against the Mets in his Grapefruit League debut, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Meyer issued a two-out walk in the frame but needed only 13 pitches to get out of things unscathed. The right-hander's four-seamer averaged 96.4 mph in the outing, which is up more than two mph from what he averaged with the pitch last season. Meyer attributed the velocity increase to "a big offseason in the weight room," Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports. He had an up-and-down 2024 season which featured a 5.68 ERA and ended prematurely due to a shoulder issue, but Meyer could have some untapped upside as part of the Marlins' rotation in 2025.

Working on expanding arsenal
Meyer worked with new Marlins pitching coach Daniel Moskos this offseason on grips for a sinker and a sweeper, as well as refining his changeup, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com repo...
Impact
"My slider is going to be more down in depth and my sweeper's going to come across the plate," Meyer said Friday before displaying his new arsenal in a live batting practice session. "I feel like with the movement, there's definitely a big separation between those two... My change is going to be a really good pitch, too, one of my best pitches. I feel like all my pitches are one of my best pitches right now. I just have crazy confidence in them that I haven't had a lot in the past going through the injury." Meyer has relied mainly on two pitches, his mid-90s fastball and nasty slider, dating back to his college days, and if even one of his other offerings can become a quality pitch, it would significantly improve his chances of not just sticking in the rotation, but reaching his sky-high ceiling as a starter.

Throws live batting practice
Meyer (shoulder) threw live batting practice Friday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Meyer's 2024 season ended in early September due to right shoulder bursitis, but it appears he is entering camp this spring without any restrictions. Assuming good health, the young right-hander should have a leg up for one of the spots in the Marlins' rotation. Meyer posted a 5.68 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 46:19 K:BB through 57 innings in 2024.

Officially placed on IL
The Marlins placed Meyer on the 15-day injured list Saturday with right shoulder bursitis, retroactive to Sept. 4.
Impact
Meyer was originally slated to make his next start Sunday against Philadelphia. However, his move to the IL will keep him sidelined for multiple turns through the rotation, meaning the 25-year-old righty likely only has one or two starts left in the season, even in a best-case scenario. The Marlins have yet to name a replacement for Meyer in their starting rotation.

Headed to IL
Meyer will be placed on the injured list Saturday, Isaac Azout of FishOnFirst.com reports.
Impact
It's unclear what the injury is, but Meyer will no longer start Sunday against the Phillies. Even if his stay on the injured list is for the minimum term, Meyer will likely be able to make only one or two more starts this season.

Falls to Washington
Meyer (3-5) took the loss Tuesday against the Nationals, allowing five runs on nine hits and a walk over 5.2 innings. He struck out five.
Impact
Four of the five runs charged to Meyer came via the home-run ball. The right-hander gave up a three-run blast to Joey Gallo in the fourth inning before Keibert Ruiz added a solo shot in the sixth. The long ball has been an issue for Meyer of late -- he's now given up seven in his last four outings (20.2 innings). Overall, the 25-year-old Meyer sports a 5.68 ERA through 57 innings this year with a 1.42 WHIP and 46:19 K:BB. He's currently slated for a tough home matchup with the Phillies this weekend in his next start.

Hit with fourth loss
Meyer (3-4) took the loss against Colorado on Wednesday, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits and four walks over five innings. He struck out six.
Impact
Meyer went 1-2-3 through the opening frame before allowing the leadoff man to reach in each of the next two innings, leading to two runs coming home for Colorado - though only one of those runs would be charged to him on account of a fielding error by Cristian Pache in the third. Meyer would also go on to surrender a solo homer in the fifth and was later relieved by Kent Emanuel in the sixth after failing to retire the first two batters. On a positive note, the 25-year-old did generate 18 whiffs in the contest while logging his second-highest strikeout total this month. However, Meyer has now lost four of his six starts in August, posting a 7.42 ERA over that stretch. He's also coughed up at least one homer in three straight outings.

Tosses quality start in no-decision
Meyer allowed three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out two batters over six innings in a no-decision against the Cubs on Friday.
Impact
Meyer looked good on Friday, registering his first quality start since April 13. The 25-year-old had struggled since being called up on July 27, pitching to an 8.10 ERA and allowing four or more runs in his last four games prior to Friday. Meyer will not be facing an inning's restriction the rest of the way and should be given plenty of opportunities to find his footing.

Can't find plate in loss
Meyer (3-3) took the loss Saturday, giving up four runs on six hits and three walks over four innings as the Marlins fell 4-0 to the Mets. He struck out three.
Impact
While the Miami offense gave the rookie right-hander no support, Meyer created his own problems by throwing only 49 of 90 pitches for strikes and having poor command within the strike zone -- four of the six hits he served up went for extra bases, including solo shots by Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso. In five outings since returning to the big-league rotation in late July, Meyer has stumbled to an 8.10 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and 19:9 K:BB through 23.1 innings, but the Marlins will let him work through his growing pains. The 25-year-old lines up to make his next start at home next weekend against the Cubs.

Victorious against Padres
Meyer (3-2) picked up the win Sunday against San Diego, allowing four runs on seven hits and no walks across 6.1 innings. He struck out four.
Impact
Meyer retired the first nine batters he faced Sunday and kept the Padres scoreless until the fifth inning. However, the 25-year-old yielded an extra-base hit and at least one run in each of his final three frames, resulting in his third consecutive start with at least three earned runs. On a more positive note, Meyer didn't allow a homer after allowing five long balls in his previous three outings. Through 36.1 innings, Meyer has a 5.20 ERA, a 1.27 WHIP and a 30:9 K:BB. He's tentatively scheduled to face the Mets for his next start.

Takes second loss
Meyer (2-2) took the loss Tuesday against Cincinnati, allowing six runs on eight hits and three walks over four innings. He struck out two.
Impact
It was a tough night for Meyer, who allowed runs in both the second and third innings before the Reds put up a four spot in the fourth. After allowing just four earned runs in his first three starts (17 innings) in April, Meyer has struggled to a 9.00 ERA in three outings since rejoining the Marlins rotation in late July. Overall, the 25-year-old southpaw sports a 5.10 ERA with a 1.30 WHIP and 26:9 K:BB across 30 innings in the majors this season. Meyer will look to get on track in his next start, currently lined up for this weekend at home versus the Padres.

Struggles with long ball Thursday
Meyer (2-1) allowed four runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out seven batters over five innings in a no-decision against Atlanta on Thursday.
Impact
All four runs Meyer allowed came via the long ball, as Austin Riley and Orlando Arcia each hit a solo shot against him and Matt Olson contributed a two-run blast. While he did flash some swing-and-miss stuff with 13 whiffs and seven punchouts, the young right-hander was unable to avoid his first loss of the campaign. Meyer has struggled since returning to Miami's rotation July 27, allowing seven runs and serving up four homers over nine innings across two starts.

No restrictions for rest of season
Meyer won't have any restrictions on his workload for the rest of the season, either in terms of innings pitches or pitches per start, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Impact
The 25-year-old right-hander made three big-league starts in April before being sent back down to Triple-A Jacksonville to make sure wasn't overworked as he made his return from Tommy John surgery in August 2022. Meyer threw only 58 innings over three months for Jacksonville, and the erratic schedule may have played into his 4.34 ERA and 1.48 WHIP at Triple-A. Now that he's back in the majors though, the Marlins will keep him on a regular schedule and won't hold him back. After throwing 85 pitches over four innings in his return Saturday, Meyer lines up to take his next turn through the rotation this weekend in Atlanta.

Disappointing in return
Meyer allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three batters over four innings in a no-decision against Milwaukee on Saturday.
Impact
Meyer pitched well in his initial stint in the majors this season, collecting two wins and posting a 2.12 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 14:3 K:BB across 17 innings over three starts back in April. The right-hander's return to Miami's rotation Saturday was thus big news in fantasy, but the 25-year-old endured his worst big-league start of the campaign and failed to complete five innings for the first time. Meyer should nonetheless stick in the Marlins' injury-depleted rotation, and he's tentatively slated to make his next start in Atlanta.
