'It didn't go well': Cubs' decision to start Matthew Boyd on short rest backfires in 9-3 loss to Brewers Boyd had the shortest postseason outing by a Cubs starter since 1945.

Can't escape first inning Boyd took the loss in Saturday's game against the Brewers, giving up six runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk while striking out one batter over two-thirds of an inning.

Impact Boyd took the mound on three days' rest with a 1-0 lead Saturday but saw it quickly evaporate after giving up consecutive doubles to Jackson Chourio (hamstring), Brice Turang and William Contreras to lead off the inning. Boyd went on to allow three more runners to reach base and eventually score, but a fielding error from Nico Hoerner prevented them from counting against the left-hander's ledger. Considering how much he struggled while pitching on shorter rest, the Cubs will likely give Boyd the proper four days before sending him back on the bump, putting him in line to start Game 4 on Thursday (if needed).

Impact Boyd has been named the top choice for Chicago to open up the wild-card round after Cade Horton went down with a rib injury. Shota Imanaga was presumably also in the conversation, but given his shaky 5.97 ERA over his last six starts, it'll be Boyd who gets the call in Game 1, with Imanaga a candidate to follow in Game 2. Boyd faced San Diego in two starts during the regular season, both in April, surrendering two runs on 11 hits and three walks while striking out eight across 11.1 frames.
