INJURIES

Solid in fifth win Perez (5-5) picked up the win over the White Sox on Saturday, allowing one run on two hits and three walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out six.
Impact Perez retired seven of the first eight batters he faced before issuing two free passes in the top of the third. The veteran right-hander was able to work his way out of the jam, however, and allowed just one through five frames before again running into trouble in the sixth. Perez would then be relieved by Bryan Hoeing with one out in the inning, though the former was still able to log his fifth win of the campaign and his third as a member of the Padres. He's now allowed one run or fewer in each of his last three starts and carries a very strong 1.08 ERA in September to go along with a 13:5 K:BB.

White Sox look to stop 3-game losing streak, take on the Padres

Goes five innings Sunday Perez allowed a run on two hits and a walk while striking out two over five-plus innings in a no-decision versus the Giants on Sunday.
Impact The lone mistake on Perez's line was a solo home run by Donovan Walton in the sixth inning, which tied the game at 1-1. Perez ended up missing one turn through the rotation while on the paternity list. He's allowed multiple runs just three times over eight starts since he was traded from the Pirates to the Padres, though he's completed six innings just three times in that span. Perez has a 4.36 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 98:44 K:BB across 126 innings through 24 starts this year. He's lined up to make his next start at home versus the White Sox.

Padres play the Giants after Solano's 4-hit game

The San Diego Padres take on the San Francisco Giants after Dónovan Solano had four hits against the Giants on Saturday

Returns from paternity leave The Padres reinstated Perez from the paternity list Saturday.
Impact After spending the maximum of three days away from the team following the birth of his child, Perez will now report back to the Padres a day ahead of his upcoming start Sunday versus San Francisco. Tom Cosgrove was optioned back to Triple-A El Paso in a corresponding move.

In line to start Sunday Perez (personal) is listed as the Padres' probable starting pitcher for Sunday's game against the Giants in San Francisco.
Impact Perez has missed the Padres' last two games after being placed on the paternity list Wednesday, and while he could remain away from the team for Saturday's contest as well, he looks poised to rejoin the club for the series finale at Oracle Park. Since coming over in a deal with the Pirates at the trade deadline, Perez has turned in a 2.84 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 33:11 K:BB in 38 innings over his seven outings with San Diego.

Placed on paternity list The Padres placed Perez on the paternity list Wednesday.
Impact Perez will be allowed to miss up to three games while he spends time with his family, making it possible he doesn't make his next scheduled start Friday. While he's away, Tom Cosgrove will come up from Triple-A to give San Diego additional bullpen help.

Placed on paternity list The Padres placed Perez on the paternity list Wednesday.
Impact Perez is allowed to be away from the team for up to three games, and the Padres will push back his next scheduled start from Friday to Sunday while he spends time with his family, per Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune. While Perez is away, Tom Cosgrove will come up from Triple-A to give San Diego additional bullpen help.

Misses win despite strong outing Perez did not factor into the decision in a loss to the Tigers on Thursday, allowing five hits and one walk over 6.1 shutout innings. He struck out five.
Impact Perez was fantastic over his 6.1 innings of work, issuing only one walk --which came in the opening frame, while allowing just one runner to reach second base in the contest. Unfortunately for the southpaw, San Diego would go on to squander a 3-0 lead after he departed to prevent him from coming away with the win. It marked Perez's second time this season in which he's hurled six shutout frames, with the previous one coming as a member of the Pirates. Thursday's performance also snapped a streak of six-consecutive starts in which he had surrendered at least one home run.

Yields four runs in win Perez (5-4) allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks over five innings Friday, striking out four and earning a win over the Rays.
Impact It wasn't a very clean outing for Perez but San Diego racked up 13 runs to give him an easy victory. All four runs against him came during the second inning, capped off by a two-run shot from Yandy Diaz. Perez is now 2-0 with a 3.41 ERA over six starts since joining the Padres. For the year, he owns a 4.71 ERA with a 91:42 K:BB through 114.2 innings. Perez is currently in line for a home matchup against the Tigers next week.

Uninspiring showing Sunday Perez allowed one run on four hits and three walks while striking out a batter over 3.2 innings. He did not factor into the decision.
Impact Perez shut out the Padres through the first three innings before J.D. Martinez took him deep to center for the game's first run. He went on to walk three straight batters with two outs after giving up the home run and couldn't make it out of the inning. That's now back-to-back starts for Perez failing to make it to the fifth inning and he's combined for a 3:4 K:BB in 8.1 innings over that span. Perez's spot in the rotation is still secure for now with Matt Waldron optioned to Triple-A El Paso and Yu Darvish (elbow) being placed back on the 15-day injured list despite being reinstated from the restricted list. Perez owns a 4.60 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 87:39 K:BB in 109.2 innings and lines up to face the Rays in a road start over the weekend.

Takes no-decision Tuesday Perez did not factor into the decision in Tuesday's win over the Twins, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out two over 4.2 innings.
Impact Perez had his worst outing since being acquired by the Padres but still pitched well enough to keep them in the game. He blanked the Twins through three innings before Ryan Jeffers took him deep in the fourth to put them ahead 2-1. Perez then found himself with bases loaded and nobody out in the fifth. Things could've taken a turn for the worst but was helped out on a sacrifice fly to left that turned into a double play after Austin Martin was thrown out at home in a rundown. Perez has given up a home run in each of his last four starts but has been an ideal fill-in as the Padres fifth pitcher while they wait for Yu Darvish (personal) to make his way back to the team. For the year, Perez owns a 4.67 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 86:36 K:BB in 106 innings. He lines up to face the Mets on Sunday to complete a two-start week.

Fans eight in win Perez (3-5) picked up the win Wednesday against the Pirates, allowing one earned run on five hits and one walk while striking out eight in 5.1 innings.
Impact Other than a solo home run by Joey Bart in the sixth inning, Perez was outstanding Wednesday, racking up a season-high eight strikeouts en route to his third win of the season. Perez has excelled since being acquired at the trade deadline, compiling a robust 1.96 ERA, 0.76 WHIP and 21:3 K:BB in 18.1 innings (three starts). Even with the strong first impression, the 33-year-old has surrendered four long balls during that stretch and his 1.5 HR/9 (17th percentile) remains a concern moving forward.

Fans six in quality start Perez came away with a no-decision in Friday's 6-2 extra-inning win over the Marlins, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out six.
Impact Both runs came on back-to-back solo shots by Jake Burger and Jonah Bride in the fourth inning, but otherwise Perez was sharp in his second outing for San Diego. The veteran southpaw tossed 90 pitches (58 strikes) en route to his third straight quality start and seventh of the year, but he was still on the hook for the loss until Jackson Merrill forced extra innings with a solo homer of his own in the ninth. Perez will look for his first win in a Padres uniform when he takes the mound next week at home against the Pirates -- the team that sent him west at the trade deadline.

AUGUST 9, 2024 • Associated Press
Quality start in team debut Perez allowed a run on three hits and struck out seven without walking a batter over seven innings in a no-decision versus the Rockies on Saturday.
Impact Perez's lone mistake in his San Diego debut was a solo home run surrendered to Hunter Goodman. Over his last two starts, Perez has allowed just one run across 12 innings, and it was encouraging that he avoided issuing a walk for the first time since May 8. The veteran southpaw now has a 4.96 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 70:32 K:BB over 89 innings across 17 starts between the Padres and the Pirates this year. He's projected for a favorable road start at Miami in his next outing.
