After striking out 50 batters in 32.2 frames in High-A ball, he continued racking up whiffs with his 10-strikeout performance Wednesday. One of the keys to his success this season has been improved control; his overall 4.9 BB/9, though not overly impressive, ranks as his best season mark across four minor-league campaigns.

Moves up to Double-A The Yankees promoted Medina from High-A Hudson Valley to Double-A Somerset on Sunday, Josh Norris of Baseball America reports.

Impact Medina was one of three Hudson Valley rotation members to receive a call-up to the next rung of the minors, with Ken Waldichuk and Hayden Wesneski also joining him. The 22-year-old Medina is the youngest of the trio and likely rates as the best pitching prospect, thanks to a fastball that routinely hits triple digits to go with an excellent curveball and a plus changeup. He blew away the competition at High-A through his first seven starts, posting a 2.76 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and a 50:19 K:BB in 32.2 innings.

Thriving in High-A ball Medina has registered a 1.45 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 32:9 K:BB across 18.2 innings with High-A Hudson Valley.

Impact The 22-year-old punched out 11 batters over 5.2 innings Thursday to pick up his second win of the campaign. One reason for Medina's dominance thus far is improved control, as his walk rate is down to a tolerable 4.5 BB/9. He could ascend quickly through the system and further cement his status as a top pitching prospect if he's able to continue to keep the walks down. Medina has the ability to hit triple digits with his fastball, so the potential for big-time strikeout numbers is undisputable.

Optioned by Yankees Medina was optioned to High-A Hudson Valley on Friday.

Impact The organization has expressed high optimism for Medina, but he's only 21 years of age and needs more seasoning, so he'll open the campaign in High-A ball. The right-hander made one Grapefruit League appearance this spring, allowing one run on four walks over two-thirds of an inning. Control has been Medina's primary struggle in his short professional career, so he'll need to work that issue out before he's ready to tackle the majors.

Could debut in 2021 Medina has a chance to be called up at some point during the coming campaign, Max Goodman of Sports Illustrated reports.

Impact Medina is only 21 years old and has yet to pitch beyond the High-A level, but the organization is clearly optimistic about his outlook as a big-leaguer. "He's somebody we're very excited about...you never know what can happen. He's somebody that we feel has a bright future and a major-league future," manager Aaron Boone stated Tuesday. Though the young right-hander's upside and strikeout potential are certainly enticing, Medina will need to show vast improvement with his command and control before he's likely to find success in the majors.
