MLB Playoffs Top Plays: Red Sox stun Rays; White Sox avoid sweep by Astros

Confirmed for Game 3 Garcia will start Game 3 of the ALDS in Chicago, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Impact As expected, Garcia is the Astros' third starter this postseason after posting a 3.30 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 167:50 K:BB in 155.1 innings this season. He figures to pitch on somewhat of a short leash, considering his youth and the bullpen availability of Zack Greinke, although he did dominate the White Sox for seven innings with eight strikeouts on June 18.

Takes eighth loss Garcia (11-8) suffered the loss against Tampa Bay on Wednesday, allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out six across five innings.

Impact Garcia wasn't helped by his defense, as a two-out error during the second inning led to three unearned runs. However, the right-hander wasn't blame-free in contributing to his own demise, as he gave up a pair of long balls and four total extra-base hits. Garcia did manage to extend his streak of lasting five innings or more to 10 starts, and he has yielded a strong 2.96 ERA and 1.24 WHIP over that stretch. He finishes the campaign with a 3.30 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 173:52 K:BB across 160.1 innings.

Let down by bullpen Wednesday Garcia settled for a no-decision against the Angels on Wednesday despite pitching six innings of shutout ball. He allowed three hits and three walks while striking out one.

Impact Garcia wasn't flawless in the outing, as he threw only 42 of 79 pitches for strikes and induced just six swings-and-misses. However, the right-hander kept Los Angeles off the scoreboard for six innings and departed with a 3-0 lead. Houston's bullpen quickly let that lead evaporate, however, as the Angels put up five runs in the seventh frame. Though Houston ultimately pulled out the win, Garcia was left with a no-decision despite the strong performance. He did, however, notch his first quality start in nearly a month, and Garcia will look to build upon this performance in his scheduled start at home against the Rays next week.

Quiets Texas in rout Garcia (11-7) got the win in Thursday's 12-1 defeat of the Rangers, allowing one run on five hits and three walks with two strikeouts in 5.1 innings.

Impact Garcia was able to navigate some traffic on the bases in the second and third innings and bide some time until Houston broke out with seven runs in the fourth. It was a nice rebound performance from the young righty after he surrendered four runs in a loss his last turn, though his two whiffs are a season low for any appearance lasting at least four innings. He's totaled just 10 strikeouts over his last three starts after averaging six per game prior to the recent stretch.

Impact Garcia will step in on short notice after Framber Valdez was scratched from Thursday's start due to a small cut on his left hand. However, Garcia will be pitching on normal rest and will attempt to bounce back after he gave up four runs in five innings to take the loss against the Angels on Saturday.

Gains velo in uncharted territory Garcia gained velocity on all five of his pitches during Sunday's outing against the Padres, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Impact Garcia's four-seam fastball averaged 94.5 mph Sunday, slightly more than the 93.3 mph average for the season. The cutter, which averaged 86 mph all year, was up to 88.5 on Sunday. He's thrown a career-high 134 innings this season, 25.1 innings more than his previous high in 2019. The 24-year-old right-hander, who never pitched above A-ball prior to 2020, keeps chugging along. In addition to maintaining or increasing velocity, the rookie showed composure Sunday, not letting the Padres' three-run first inning get to him. He yielded just three baserunners following that first frame. The Astros will continue to limit his pitches per outing, capping him at about 80, which routinely limits Garcia to fewer than six innings in his starts.

Impact The Astros bequeathed six runs for Garcia before he threw his first pitch, and they had a 7-0 lead entering the bottom of the fourth inning when the wheels started to come off. Garcia needed only 38 pitches to get through the first three innings, but he had to expend another 49 to procure the next five outs before being pulled. He also had a throwing error that extended the fourth inning, when Seattle struck for three runs. On balance, the outing was an outlier for the rookie right-hander, who has a 3.19 ERA and 1.08 WHIP over 96 innings. Impact Garcia was brilliant in earning his seventh win over the last 11 starts.
