Ramping up on back fields Gurriel (knee) continues to get at-bats and lightly run out of the batter's box in simulated games at Arizona's training camp, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.

Impact Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Tuesday that more intense game action in the Arizona Complex League could come at some point in early-to-mid April. That's when he'll test at full speed. Lovullo reiterated that late April is the earliest the outfielder could return, and that Gurriel will operate as the designated hitter initially upon his activation.

Sent to IL The Diamondbacks placed Gurriel (knee) on the 10-day injured list Wednesday.

Impact Gurriel is on the mend from Sept. 11 surgery to address a torn ACL in his right knee and is likely to remain on the shelf for at least the first month of the season. He was cleared earlier this week to serve as a designated hitter in minor-league games on the back fields of spring training but has yet to get the green light to resume playing the outfield. Once he's facing no restrictions defensively, Gurriel could report to an affiliate to begin a rehab assignment.

Cactus League action unlikely Gurriel (knee) is not expected to appear in a Cactus League game, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.

Impact There hasn't been a setback for Gurriel, who is well ahead of schedule in his rehab, but he appears to have run out of time in his quest to make the Opening Day roster. He'll continue to take at-bats on the back fields and hopes to ready by mid-April.
