How Yankees Plan to Replace Gary Sánchez at Catcher After trading Gary Sánchez to the Twins, New York is expected to platoon between Kyle Higashioka and their newest backstop, Ben Rortvedt
MARCH 14, 2022 • KANSASCITY.COM
In line for platoon role Higashioka will likely begin the 2022 campaign in the short side of a platoon after the Yankees acquired Ben Rortvedt from the Twins on Sunday, Jack Curry of YES Network reports.
Impact Higashioka will no longer have to compete for playing time with Gary Sanchez after he was dealt to the Twins as part of Sunday's trade, but he'll gain increased competition at catcher from Rortvedt, who saw his first taste of major-league action in 2021 and appeared in 39 games behind Mitch Garver and Ryan Jeffers. Neither backstop has been particularly productive while splitting time early in their careers, so it's possible that one of them could shift into a primary role behind the plate if they perform well early in 2022.

Goes deep in win Higashioka went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and an additional run scored in an 8-2 win over Oakland on Friday.
Impact The backstop made his first start since Aug. 21 and pounded his second homer in his past three games. It has largely been a frustrating campaign for Higashioka, however, as he is slashing just .184/.256/.414 overall.

Impact Higashioka slammed a two-run homer off Danny Coulombe in the fourth inning. In addition, he drove in Andrew Velazquez on a double in the third inning. The catcher is back to splitting time behind the plate with teammate Gary Sanchez (illness) after Sanchez returned August 17. Set to lose work to Sanchez Higashioka is on the bench for the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader with the Red Sox.
Impact Higashioka will likely be behind the plate for the nightcap, but his run as the Yankees' No. 1 catcher is over after top backstop Gary Sanchez (illness) was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list prior to the twin bill. While starting in 10 of the Yankees' past 12 games, Higashioka went 4-for-39 with a home run, five RBI and two additional runs.

Gets maintenance day Higashioka is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Royals.
Impact Higashioka has taken over as the Yankees' No. 1 catcher since Gary Sanchez (illness) was placed on the COVID-19 injured list Aug. 5, starting six of the past seven contests while going 4-for-24 with a home run, two doubles, five RBI and three runs. He'll just be getting a breather due to the quick turnaround for the series finale, with opening pitch set for 2:10 p.m. ET. Rob Brantly will catch for starting pitcher Lucas Luetge on Wednesday.
AUGUST 11, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Homers in loss Higashioka went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's loss to the Royals.
Impact It was largely a frustrating game for the backstop, as he struck out twice and committed two errors. However, Higashioka came through with a fourth-inning two-run blast that temporarily gave the Yankees a lead. The long ball was Higashioka's first since June 22. He has a career-high seven homers on the season but is slashing a paltry .185/.261/.411.
