Joining Giants' rotation Harrison will start Saturday's game against the Nationals, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Impact He's absorbing the rotation spot vacated by the injured Justin Verlander (pectoral). Harrison has made four relief appearances since being recalled earlier this month, allowing two runs with a 7:3 K:BB over 5.1 frames. The lefty had been starting at Triple-A Sacramento but hasn't pitched more than two innings in over three weeks, so he's likely to have a limited workload versus the Nationals.

Fans three in scoreless outing Harrison tossed two scoreless innings in Friday's 3-1 loss to the Twins, allowing three walks (one intentional) while striking out three.
Impact Harrison made his second appearance since being recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Monday and has yet to allow a run over three innings of relief. The 23-year-old southpaw is expected to remain in the bullpen for now, though he could eventually make a case to join the starting rotation after missing out on an Opening Day spot. Harrison recorded a 3.46 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and a 38:8 K:BB across 26 innings in six starts with Triple-A Sacramento.

Kyle Harrison returns to the San Francisco Giants in a relief role

Kyle Harrison has a new role in his return to the San Francisco Giants
MAY 6 • Associated Press
Set for bullpen role The Giants plan to use Harrison in their bullpen after officially recalling him from Triple-A Sacramento on Monday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Impact Harrison pitched exclusively as a starter during his time in the big leagues the past two seasons and has continued to start with Sacramento after failing to win a spot in the Giants' Opening Day rotation. Over his six outings at Triple-A, Harrison turned in a 3.46 ERA and 38:8 K:BB in 26 innings, and those strong results could give him a case for eventually supplanting Landen Roupp as the Giants' No. 5 starter. For the time being, however, Harrison will work out of the bullpen, where the Giants believe that his improved velocity in his recent appearances with Sacramento will allow him to continue piling up strikeouts as an MLB reliever. Harrison will likely stick around with the Giants through the end of their road trip this weekend before the organization decides whether to move him into a starting role, keep him on hand as a reliever or send him back to Triple-A to make regular turns through the rotation.

Returns to big leagues Harrison was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Impact Harrison will join the major-league roster for the first time in 2025 after posting a 3.46 ERA and 1.31 WHIP with 38 strikeouts over 26 innings in six starts with Triple-A Sacramento so far this year. The right-hander could replace Landen Roupp in the Giants' starting rotation or operate as a bullpen arm with the big club moving forward. In a corresponding move, reliever Lou Trivino was designated for assignment Sunday.

Loses out on rotation spot The Giants optioned Harrison to Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact Harrison was among four players vying for the final spot in the big-league rotation, but he didn't do much in the Cactus League to help his case, finishing with eight earned runs allowed in just 6.2 innings. He'll be joined in Sacramento's rotation by Keaton Winn, leaving Hayden Birdsong and Landen Roupp as the remaining options for San Francisco.

Weight, velo returning after virus Harrison showed better velocity in his last Cactus League appearance Sunday versus the Athletics, sitting at 93-to-94 mph and touching 95 mph several times, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sp...
Impact The bump up in velocity is encouraging, as Harrison had been sitting in the low-90s in camp after losing 13 pounds due to a virus. However, while his weight and velocity are coming back, Harrison's results this spring have not been encouraging, particularly his last two times out when he's surrendered a combined eight runs in 4.2 innings. Meanwhile, Hayden Birdsong (0.75 ERA, 18:0 in 12 innings) and Landen Roupp (3.75 ERA, 14:1 K:BB in 12 frames) have both been excellent. The competition for the fifth spot in the Giants' rotation could come down to the wire.

Impact Harrison reached a maximum velocity of 92.3 mph in his last spring outing. He had said before spring training that he's rediscovered his fastball velocity after the pitch dipped below 93 mph on average last season, but that hasn't shown up yet this spring. If he doesn't make the rotation, he's a candidate for the bullpen but could also be kept as a starter at Triple-A.
MARCH 8 • ROTOWIRE
First spring appearance Friday Harrison is expected to pitch in Friday's game against the Brewers following starter Logan Webb, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact Harrison said a couple weeks ago that he's rediscovered his fastball velocity after the pitch dipped below 93 mph on average last season, so it will be worth tracking his velocity in camp. It's also encouraging that he's getting into a spring game this week after ending the 2024 season with a shoulder injury. He is expected to open the year in the Giants rotation.
FEBRUARY 25 • ROTOWIRE
Velocity back this spring Harrison said Wednesday that he's rediscovered his velocity this spring after fixing issues with his delivery, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact Harrison averaged 92.5 mph with his four-seamer in 2024 and just 91.2 mph in his final start of the season before he was shut down with left shoulder inflammation. That's after the pitch came in at 93.5 mph on average in 2023. Harrison believes the shoulder injury and an earlier ankle problem contributed to his delivery getting out of whack, but he's healthy now and is throwing harder. The left-hander is competing for the final spot in the Giants' rotation this spring and has some bounce-back potential if his velocity holds.
FEBRUARY 12 • ROTOWIRE
Competing for fifth rotation spot Harrison and Hayden Birdsong will be among the candidates competing for the fifth spot in the Giants' rotation, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact Logan Webb, Justin Verlander, Robbie Ray and Jordan Hicks are locked into the first four rotation spots. Harrison is likely the favorite to fill the fifth slot after making 24 starts for San Francisco last season, but the gig won't be handed to him. The left-hander posted a 4.56 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 118:42 K:BB over 124.1 frames in 2024 before his season ended prematurely due to shoulder inflammation. He has no restrictions at the start of spring training.

San Francisco Giants Boss Says Kyle Harrison 'Hungrier' Entering Season Just a couple of years ago, the San Francisco Giants had the best left handed pitching prospect in baseball in the form of Kyle Harrison.
DECEMBER 19, 2024 • SI.COM
Season likely over Giants manager Bob Melvin said Wednesday that Harrison (shoulder) is unlikely to be activated from the 15-day injured list before the season ends Sept. 29, MLB.com reports.
Impact Though the left shoulder inflammation that sent Harrison to the IL on Sept. 6 has been deemed mild following an MRI, the young southpaw won't be asked to ramp back up with little time left in the season. Harrison had already logged a career-high 124.1 innings prior to being deactivated, which is likely a factor in the organization's decision to shut him down. Over his 24 starts this season, Harrison went 7-7 with a 4.56 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 118:42 K:BB.
SEPTEMBER 16, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Placed on IL with shoulder injury The Giants placed Harrison on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to Wednesday, due to left shoulder inflammation.
Impact Harrison was roughed up in his last outing Tuesday against the Diamondbacks, when he allowed six runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three over 2.2 innings. He's given up 11 runs over his last two starts, and since the beginning of August he's posted a 7.76 ERA and 1.57 WHIP across 26.2 frames. Harrison would be eligible to return from the IL in mid-September, though it's unclear whether the injury is severe enough where the 23-year-old southpaw is shut down for the rest of the season. Austin Warren was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move.
