Impact Rocker is expected to fill the rotation spot of Jack Leiter, who is in line to receive a promotion to the big leagues next week. The 24-year-old right-hander has bounced back impressively from May 2023 Tommy John surgery, as he returned to action for Frisco shortly after the All-Star break and has delivered a 0.46 ERA, 0.61 WHIP and 29:3 K:BB over 19.2 innings. Rocker's workload has been managed carefully coming off elbow surgery, but he took a big step forward in his most recent outing for Frisco on Wednesday, when he reached season highs in both innings (4.2) and pitches (70).

Heading to Double-A Rocker will be activated from High-A Hickory's 60-day injured list and will be assigned to Double-A Frisco on Friday, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.

Impact Even though Rocker made only six starts with Hickory in 2023 before undergoing season-ending Tommy John surgery last May, the Rangers have seen enough from the right-hander during his rehab assignment in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League to have him bypass a return to the South Atlantic League. Rocker built up to three innings in his most recent ACL outing and has turned in a 6.43 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and 8:1 K:BB in seven innings through his three rehab starts. While Rocker's numbers haven't been overly impressive, Wilson notes that the 24-year-old experienced some bad luck on balls in play and showcased a wipeout slider and a fastball that comfortably sat in the upper 90s. Rocker will continue to build up his pitch count as he heads to Frisco, though the Rangers are still likely to manage his innings carefully for the rest of the season while he returns from a major arm injury.

Impact Rocker had his surgery performed in Arlington, Texas under the supervision of Dr. Keith Meister, one of the nation's top orthopedic surgeons. Though Rangers general manager Chris Young stated the elbow injury wasn't related to the pre-draft concerns that resulted in Rocker going unsigned by the Mets in 2021 before he was selected by Texas with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2022 First-Year Player Draft, it's a troubling setback on the health front for the 23-year-old nonetheless. Rocker, who previously underwent arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder in September 2021, will likely be sidelined until late until the 2024 season.

Impact Rocker was the third selection by the Rangers in the 2022 draft, and in his six starts with High-A Hickory in 2023 he registered a 3.86 ERA with a 42:7 K:BB over 28 innings. The right-hander was also a first-round pick in 2021 by the Mets, but due to medical concerns he ended up not signing with the club. Rocker will miss the rest of the 2023 season while recovering from the surgery, and he'll all but assuredly miss a few moths to begin the 2024 campaign as well.

Impact Rocker at age 23 is much older than his competition, but the larger point is that his career looks back on track after a tumultuous last few years. He was drafted 10th overall by the Mets in 2021 before they learned of a shoulder issue during a post-draft, pre-contract physical. He had arthroscopic surgery in September 2021 and then pitched in the independent leagues. Rocker was then drafted in the first round of 2022 and didn't pitch in affiliated ball until the 2022 Arizona Fall League, where he struggled with his command (12 BB in 14 IP). It looks like he's back on track and he has the talent to be promoted aggressively, but the Rangers may also want to see him continue to gain confidence at High-A.
