Bounced in second inning Bubic (3-6) allowed seven runs on nine hits and a walk over 1.1 innings Sunday, striking out one and taking a loss against St. Louis.

Impact Bubic was hit hard right out of the gate Sunday, allowing three runs in the first inning as the Cardinals brought all nine starters to the plate. He then coughed up four more runs in the second, including homers by Nolan Arenado and Tyler O'Neill. The 23-year-old southpaw tossed 56 pitches as his season ERA shot up from 4.43 to 5.09 through 86.2 innings. Bubic had given up seven runs over 22.2 innings (2.78 ERA) over his four previous starts. He's lined up to face the Cubs on the road next weekend.

Impact Surprisingly, despite the inefficient outing, the only run to score on Bubic was a leadoff homer by Dylan Carlson to start the game. On the bright side, it was his fifth straight start allowing three or fewer runs, lowering his season ERA to 4.43 through 85.1 frames. The 23-year-old southpaw has just one win over his last nine starts and still owns a 3-5 record. Bubic is projected to face St. Louis at home next weekend.

Impact Bubic was hurt by the long ball, as all three of the earned runs against him came on home runs. However, he was otherwise solid, both limiting baserunners and racking up strikeouts. Bubic has quietly put together four consecutive quality starts, during which he's allowed eight earned runs across 24 innings while striking out 20 and walking nine. While not dominant, he's seemingly moved past his early season struggles, when he posted a 5.40 ERA and 1.59 WHIP across his first 56.2 frames.

The left-hander exited the contest in line for a loss but received a reprieve when Salvador Perez tied the game with a solo homer in the ninth inning. Bubic has hurled exactly six innings in each of his past three starts, posting a standout 2.00 ERA and 1.06 WHIP over that stretch. His 12:6 K:BB across those 18 innings portends some regression, but it is worth noting that he has been taken deep only once over the trio of appearances. He's tentatively slated to make another start in a rematch against the White Sox -- this time on the road -- early next week.
