Impact Allard did good work, keeping the Rangers in the game with three perfect innings from the sixth to the eighth, but the offense couldn't muster much beyond two solo home runs. It was just his third appearance out of a bullpen that currently carries 14 members. His roster spot survived the activation of Joely Rodriguez on Friday, but the seldom-used left-hander could be optioned with Willie Calhoun (groin) expected to be activated Saturday.

Impact The 23-year-old appeared in 11 games for the Rangers last season and posted a 7.75 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 32:20 K:BB over 33.2 innings and won't open 2021 on the big-league roster. Allard was mentioned this spring as a candidate to be part of a piggyback tandem rather than a traditional starter, though he figures to be part of the rotation at Triple-A.

Impact Texas manager Chris Woodward talked about the need to be "creative" with his staff, which includes several young hurlers that do not have a track record of pitching a lot of innings in a season. There's also a strategic benefit, per the manager. "You've got to have opposite arms, obviously, with one guy throwing two-seamers this way and another guy throwing 97 this way. Just matching them up the best way possible. I think this is something we're definitely talking about." Allard has allowed three hits and one walk while striking out nine over six scoreless innings in Cactus League play.

May not start Wednesday Texas manager Chris Woodward would not commit to Allard starting Wednesday against Oakland, Sam Blum of the Dallas Morning News reports.

Impact Allard has allowed 10 runs over the last 3.2 innings and didn't make it out of the first inning in his last start. When asked about Wednesday's starter, Woodward said, "we'll have to wait until after [Tuesday's] game, just to see where we stand pitching wise." That means if certain pitchers are not needed, there's a chance one of them could replace Allard. The most likely candidates are Wes Benjamin and Taylor Hearn, neither of whom pitched in Tuesday's loss to the Athletics.
