INJURIES

Shifts to 60-day IL The Rangers transferred Arihara (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list Wednesday.
Impact Arihara will be on the mend for at least three months after undergoing surgery on his right shoulder last week, so his move to the 60-day IL won't have any bearing on his recovery timetable. The transaction opens up a spot on the 40-man roster for outfielder Jason Martin, who was promoted from Triple-A Round Rock in a corresponding move.

Could miss entire season Arihara will be shut down for at least 12 weeks following shoulder surgery and may miss the rest of the year, Chris Halicke of SI.com reports.
Impact Arihara was on the injured list due to a finger issue, but the Rangers have since discovered a much more serious injury. He'll go under the knife soon to repair a shoulder aneurysm. The righty will be unable to throw until at least mid-August and will then have to build back up to full strength, leaving him with little time left in the season even if his recovery goes smoothly. Even a minor setback could mean his first MLB season is over after just seven starts.

Moved to IL with finger injury The Rangers placed Arihara on the 10-day injured list Sunday due to a right middle finger injury, Sam Blum of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact Arihara had been experience discomfort in the same finger following his April 30 outing against the Red Sox, resulting in the Rangers skipping him for one turn through the rotation. The rookie demonstrated enough progress to gain clearance to start Saturday against the Mariners, but he wasn't in top form, as he was shelled for five runs on six hits and three walks over 3.2 innings. Manager Chris Woodward noted that Arihara disclosed following the poor start that the sore finger was still affecting him, so the Rangers will shut him down for the next week and a half with the hope that extended rest resolves the issue. Hyeon-Jong Yang, Kolby Allard and Wes Benjamin are the most likely candidates to step in as the Rangers' fifth starter while Arihara is on the shelf.

Impact The 28-year-old now holds a 6.59 ERA and 1.53 WHIP on the year. His spot in the Rangers' rotation may be in jeopardy.

Cleared to start Saturday Arihara (finger) completed a bullpen session Thursday with no issues and will start Saturday versus the Mariners.
Impact The 28-year-old was pushed back from Wednesday's scheduled start after receiving an injection in his right middle finger earlier in the week, but he'll only end up having his outing pushed back a few days. Arihara has a 5.76 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 14:9 K:BB through 25 innings this season, and he's surrendered 11 runs across his past two starts.

Bullpen pushed to Thursday Arihara (finger) was scheduled to throw a bullpen session Thursday, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.
Impact An earlier report had Arihara throwing a bullpen Wednesday, but it was pushed to Thursday. If the right-hander comes out of the session without a setback, he is expected to start Saturday. If not, then Dane Dunning will start Saturday with Kyle Gibson going Sunday.

Bullpen session on tap Wednesday Arihara (finger) will throw a bullpen session Wednesday, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Impact The 28-year-old was pushed back from Wednesday's scheduled start after receiving an injection to his right middle finger, but he's now scheduled for a bullpen session and could start Saturday if all goes well. Arihara was able to throw without any pain Tuesday, and he'll likely push things harder during the bullpen session.
MAY 5, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Testing finger Tuesday Arihara (finger) will play catch Tuesday, Sam Blum of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact Arihara received an injection into an area of his right middle finger that had a callus. If he's still feeling discomfort following Tuesday's session, he'll likely be placed on the injured list. However, if he makes it through without an issue, Arihara will be allowed to pitch on his next turn through the rotation. His scheduled start Wednesday is being skipped after two ineffective outings that might be related to the finger issue.

Impact While Arihara won't be available to pitch on his normal rest while he contends with a sore right middle finger, the Rangers aren't yet ruling out the right-hander from making a start later in the week. He recently received an injection in the finger, and the Rangers are hopeful Arihara will show enough improvement in the coming days to avoid a stint on the injured list. The rookie right-hander has been hit hard over his last two outings, failing to escape the third inning on both occasions while surrendering five home runs and six walks between the starts.

Gets injection for finger callus Arihara received an injection to address the callus he developed on his right middle finger during his start in Friday's loss to the Red Sox, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports.
Impact The callus likely had an effect in the rookie submitting his worst start of the season, as Boston torched him for six runs on four hits -- all home runs -- and two walks over 2.2 innings. The Rangers are optimistic that Arihara will be ready to go for his next turn through the rotation Wednesday in Minnesota, but if the injection fails to clear up the callus in a timely fashion, he'll likely be moved to the 10-day injured list. Long reliever Hyeon-Jong Yang would presumably be the top candidate to make a spot start if Arihara isn't cleared to face the Twins, according to Daniel Guerrero of MLB.com.
MAY 2, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Velocity down Friday Arihara exhibited diminished velocity during Friday's start, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact Texas coaches entered Friday's contest concerned that Arihara was tipping pitches and are now worry about reduced velocity. He recorded just one swing-and-miss among his 55 pitches. "The speed on the split is like way lower," manager Chris Woodward said after the game. "So it's just, I don't know. I don't know if there's something. We asked him. He said he felt fine. I don't know if it's the four days rest. It's something we're going to have to address." The right-hander has allowed 11 runs and five home runs in 4.2 innings over his last two starts. Meanwhile, the Rangers got 4.1 scoreless innings out of reliever Hyeon-Jong Yang, who has shined in two bullpen-saving relief appearances this week. Woodward confirmed that Yang is being evaluated for a spot in the rotation, presumably as a replacement for Arihara.

Allows four homers in loss Arihara (2-3) yielded six runs on four hits and two walks over 2.2 innings Friday, striking out one batter and taking a loss against Boston. He allowed four home runs.
Impact Boston jumped on Arihara right out of the gate with J.D. Martinez knocking a three-run blast and Xander Bogaerts following up with a solo shot before an out was recorded. The 28-year-old then served up solo homers to Martinez and Rafael Devers in the third. After a promising start to his MLB career, Arihara has been hammered for 11 runs and five home runs in just 4.2 innings over his last two outings. He'll carry a 5.76 ERA into next week's projected start in Minnesota.

Team addresses pitch tipping The Rangers addresses a potential pitch-tipping situation with Arihara ahead of his scheduled start Friday against the Red Sox, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact In his last start against the White Sox on Sunday, Arihara allowed 10 baserunners in just two innings. Chicago batters laid off his splitter and changeup, which aroused suspicion among Texas coaches. "I did kind of see something there," manager Chris Woodward said. "[Co-pitching coach] Doug [Mathis] talked to him a little bit about it, just to make sure that we get ahead of it. I don't know if they had it or not, but it just looked kind of fishy to me."

The Red Sox will start Nathan Eovaldi on Friday and the Rangers are expected to counter with Kohei Arihara

Struggles in loss Sunday Arihara (2-2) allowed five runs on six hits and four walks over two innings in a loss to the White Sox on Sunday. He failed to record a strikeout.
Impact Arihara needed 70 pitches (40 strikes) to labor through two innings in his worst of five starts this year. He had pitched 11.1 scoreless innings over his last two outings before Sunday's poor showing. The 28-year-old right-hander has a 4.03 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 13:7 K:BB in 22.1 innings overall. His next start is expected to be Friday versus the Red Sox.

Impact Arihara tried to establish the fastball during his first two starts, in which he went 0-1 with a 5.00 ERA. Since that didn't work, he went back to the style he used back in Japan, and the results over his two most recent starts have been far more impressive -- 11.1 scoreless innings with an 11:2 K:BB.
