The Rangers need a Khris Davis type. But can he return to form?
The Rangers have been lacking in right-handed power since Nelson Cruz departed. Can Davis get back to his 2018 form to be that force?

Breaks out Thursday
Davis went 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI in Thursday's spring game against the Reds.
Impact
Davis has had an unremarkable spring to this point, but Thursday's two-homer binge is a reminder of what the right-handed slugger can bring to a lefty-dominant batting order. With Willie Calhoun (groin) a potential candidate for the injured list to start the season, Davis could earn a roster spot and serve as the primary designated hitter. Minus Calhoun, Davis' main competition for DH at-bats is the loser of the competition at first base between left-handed hitters Ronald Guzman and Nate Lowe.

Slow spring
Davis went 0-for-2 with a walk and two strikeouts in Sunday's spring game against the Rockies.
Impact
The slugging Davis is now 1-for-18 with seven strikeouts over eight Cactus League games. If not for the $16.7 million he's owed this season, Davis might be an easy cut for the Rangers. He's had a history of slow springs followed by productive regular seasons, but that hasn't held the last two seasons, leaving the team with a decision. As a right-handed power hitter, Davis would provide balance to a lefty-dominant order. If the Rangers move on from him, they could give DH at-bats to Willie Calhoun and would have the flexibility to keep Ronald Guzman.

Traded to Texas

Impact
Davis was excellent for Oakland from 2015-18, hitting exactly .247 each year while averaging 40 homers and topping out at a league-leading 48 in 2018. While that's not too far in the rearview mirror, it's not an accurate reflection of who Davis is at this point, as he's coming off two straight seasons with a wRC+ of 82, a number that might work for a defense-first catcher but certainly doesn't play as a designated hitter. Heading into his age-33 season, it's tough to see Davis suddenly bouncing all the way back to peak form, and the rebuilding Rangers won't have much reason to keep a veteran in the lineup if he continues to struggle.

Clubs another homer
Davis went 2-for-3 with a solo home run during Tuesday's Game 2 loss to the Astros.
Impact
The 32-year-old smacked a two-run shot during the series opener and followed it with Tuesday's solo homer, but the A's remain in a 2-0 hole entering Game 3. Davis struggled during the regular season with a .632 OPS -- the worst mark of his career -- but he's found his groove in four playoff games, going 7-for-23 with three homers and six RBI.
