Lands on IL Thompson was placed on the 10-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation, retroactive to Sept. 3.

Impact Thompson has been knocked around lately to the tune of nine earned runs in his last 7.2 innings. It's not entirely clear how serious this injury is, but Thompson will be eligible to return as soon as Sept. 14 with the backdated stint. Adbert Alzolay is a logical candidate to step into the rotation next week.

Struggles in start Thompson (3-3) did not factor into the decision Thursday surrendering three runs across 1.2 innings on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts in a win over the Pirates.

Impact The rookie right-hander drew only his fourth start of the season Thursday surrendering three runs via a first inning home run from Colin Moran. Working primarily as a reliever, Thompson holds a 3.54 ERA across 48.1 innings this season with 48:28 K:BB. Should he draw another start, it is scheduled to come next week against the Reds.

Impact The Cubs took a 6-0 lead in the top of the first, but Thompson was unable to maintain the lead. He wasn't responsible for the White Sox's go-ahead run in the third inning, but the right-hander can still shoulder a share of the blame for the team's defeat. It was by far the worst appearance of the season for Thompson, who saw his ERA tick up to 3.09 with a 1.41 WHIP and 45:26 K:BB through 46.2 innings. He's mainly worked as a reliever at the major-league level, but he could get a more favorable matchup versus the Pirates next week if he gets another turn in the rotation after Friday's disaster.

Impact Thompson had been stretching out as a starter at Triple-A Iowa recently, and he posted a 0.68 WHIP and 16:5 K:BB in 14.2 scoreless innings across his last four outings. The right-hander will make his second major-league start at home against the Royals on Saturday, and he should have the chance to claim a long-term spot in the rotation if his success from the minors carries over to the big leagues. Right-hander Jake Jewell was sent down to make room for Thompson on the active roster.

Impact Thompson was reported as Saturday's expected starter earlier in the week, and the skipper has now confirmed the right-hander will be promoted from Triple-A Iowa to pitch. The 26-year-old posted a 2.21 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 43:22 K:BB over 40.2 innings as a reliever for the Cubs earlier this season, but he's been stretching out as a starter at Triple-A since being demoted in late July. The right-hander didn't surrender a run and allowed only five hits over four outings during his brief time in the minors, and he'll attempt to carry over that success to the majors as the rebuilding Cubs give him a look in the starting rotation.

May make second MLB start Saturday The Cubs are expected to call up Thompson from Triple-A Iowa to start Saturday's game against the Royals, Russell Dorsey of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Impact Though he has worked out of the bullpen in all but one of his 27 appearances with the Cubs this season, Thompson has been pitching exclusively as a starter since being optioned to Iowa in late July. He built up to 62 pitches in his most recent start for Iowa on Sunday, spinning 4.1 no-hit innings while striking out seven. Expect the Cubs to cap Thompson around 70-to-80 pitches in Saturday's start, assuming he does in fact get the call back to the big leagues. So long as Thompson doesn't completely implode in that outing, he could have a spot in the Chicago rotation for the rest of the season as the rebuilding club auditions the 26-year-old for a full-time starting role in 2022.
