Platooning in left field Upton and Brian Goodwin will platoon in left field following the promotion of top-prospect Jo Adell, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

Impact The 32-year-old is off to an awful start in 2020 with a .492 OPS, two home runs and 14 strikeouts through 41 plate appearances, and the Angels have now called up their top prospect. Upton would be on the short side of the platoon if manager Joe Maddon goes strictly by left/right matchups, but it remains unclear exactly how the team plans to split playing time. Goodwin's 1.079 OPS through eight games could be enough to illustrate he should fill the larger side of the platoon.

Effective early in season Diekman earned his second hold in a win over the Angels on Monday, firing a scoreless eighth inning during which he issued two walks and recorded three strikeouts.

Impact It was a bit of an adventure for the left-hander, who needed 23 pitches to navigate the frame thanks to the two free passes he issued. However, Diekman worked around his troubles by striking out the big-name trio of Shohei Ohtani, Justin Upton and Albert Pujols, the latter an inning-ending whiff with Mike Trout on second base. The 33-year-old Diekman has already logged three scoreless appearances across his first four games, and given early returns, manager Bob Melvin is likely to continue calling on him frequently.

Wendelken came on to get the last out of the fifth inning Saturday, Melvin made good on his pledge to have Luzardo pitch as early as in the second game of the season by giving the young left-hander a solid workload. Luzardo recorded his nine outs on an efficient 44 pitches, and the southpaw hit the ground running with a strikeout of Justin Upton that featured three straight fastballs of 97 mph or higher. Melvin was unsurprisingly effusive in his praise of Luzardo following the outing, noting the young hurler "came through with flying colors" after a significantly delayed arrival in summer camp relegated him to a relief role to start the campaign.
