Fans five in Thursday's outing
Gray gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits over 3.1 innings in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros. He struck out five.
Impact
After a shaky spring debut, Gray was able to hit his spots better in his second outing. The 24-year-old is locked into a rotation spot for the Nationals to begin the season, and his ability to stay out of the middle of the plate will be one of the keys to his development in 2022 after he posted an ugly 2.42 HR/9 and 5.48 ERA over his first 70.2 big-league innings last year.

Rocked in spring debut
Gray gave up four runs on four hits, including three home runs, in 1.2 innings during Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets.
Impact
It was not an encouraging start to the spring for the 24-year-old considering he served up 19 homers in 70.2 big-league innings last season between the Dodgers and Nationals, but manager Dave Martinez thinks Gray will be able to iron out the issues he had Saturday, per Jessica Camerato of MLB.com. "He threw the ball well," Martinez said after the game. "The ball was coming out -- it was just, location. A couple balls he tried to get in just ran back over the plate. ... For him, it's working ahead in counts. His putaway pitch, he's trying to bury too many pitches. He's got to start throwing his breaking balls a little bit more for strikes." Gray has a spot in the Opening Day rotation locked up, and Washington is hoping his 24.8 percent strikeout rate in the majors last year is a better reflection of his future than his bloated HR rate.

Earns second straight win
Gry (2-2) allowed three runs on four hits and three walks over 5.1 innings Monday, striking out four and earning a win over the Rockies.
Impact
Gray kept Colorado off the board through five innings and didn't face much of a threat until the sixth. He allowed the first three batters of the inning to reach base and eventually coughed up a three-run double to Ryan McMahon, ending his outing. The 6-foot-1 rookie has completed at least five innings in four straight starts but owns a 6.23 ERA during that span. Gray is expected to make his final start of the year this weekend at home against Boston.

Pockets first MLB win
Gray (1-2) allowed two runs on six hits and a walk over six innings against Miami on Wednesday to earn his first career victory. He also registered eight strikeouts.
Impact
Gray bounced back in a big way after having been pounded for 22 runs (and 14 walks) over his four previous starts, limiting the Marlins to RBI singles by Lewin Diaz and Jesus Sanchez. Gray stranded a pair of runners in the sixth inning to complete his fourth quality start since being acquired from the Dodgers at the trade deadline. Despite his inconsistencies, the 23-year-old has likely flashed enough -- including a 9.86 K/9 over 59.1 innings -- to solidify a rotation spot entering 2022. Gray is lined up to face the Rockies at Coors Field next Monday.

No-decision versus Rockies
Gray allowed five runs on three hits and four walks while striking out five in 5.1 innings in a no-decision versus Colorado on Friday.
Impact
Control continues to be a problem for Gray, who threw 58 of 94 pitches for strikes in this contest. He's walked 10 batters in 10.1 innings across his last two starts. The 23-year-old owns a 6.24 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 57:27 K:BB in 53.1 innings overall, while adding an 0-2 record in 11 appearances. Gray projects for a friendlier road start in Miami next week.
