Throwing Thursday Staumont (knee) threw live batting practice Thursday and has been tracking well since landing on the shelf, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.

Impact Manager Mike Matheny said this throwing session will provide a good indication of where Staumont is in his recovery. He was sidelined in late May by a knee sprain and is eligible to return Sunday at the earliest.

Impact The transaction was backdated to Thursday, so Staumont will be eligible to return June 6, though it's not yet clear whether he'll be able to do so. He's been the Royals primary ninth-inning option this season, recording five of the team's 12 saves. Greg Holland and Kyle Zimmer are tied for second with two apiece and could be the primary beneficiaries of Staumont's absence.

Impact Staumont was called upon to protect a three-run lead in the ninth inning and was able to do so to record his fifth save of the season. While the leadoff hitter reached base on an error, Staumont did surrender a double and a walk to make the frame a bit adventurous. Even so, Staumont has now recorded each of the team's last five saves, meaning it appears he has emerged as the team's preferred option in the closer role -- at least for the time being. He's pitched well enough to maintain high-leverage usage, as he currently owns a 2.18 ERA and 23:11 K:BB across 20.2 frames.

Impact Staumont hasn't had a save opportunity since late April largely due to the fact that the Royals went on an 11-game losing streak from May 2 to May 13. The 27-year-old owns a 2.29 ERA and 22:10 K:BB over 19.2 innings and could be on the fantasy radar once again if his team is able to start turning things around after they held the best record in baseball through the first month.
