Impact Robinson Chirinos is locked in as the Rangers' No. 1 catcher and the team values veteran Jeff Mathis' skills as a pitch framer and game caller, so Trevino predictably found himself on the chopping block with Texas needing to reduce its roster from 30 to 28 men ahead of Thursday's deadline. Trevino only appeared in two of the Rangers' first 10 games, going 1-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.

Impact While seeing Chirinos participate in the game is an encouraging sign, he's not out of the woods in terms of being available for Friday's season opener against Colorado. Texas manager Chris Woodward talked about Chirinos and Willie Calhoun (hip), who also took part in Sunday's game. "They are better off than I anticipated," the manager said. "I'm not sure they'll be ready for Opening Day or we would want them ready for Opening Day. But whether it is Opening Day, the second day or the third day, as long as they are ready within the first seven games, we will probably keep them on the roster." While Jeff Mathis provides a wealth of MLB experience, Woodward said earlier in camp he may roll with Jose Trevino as the top backup if Chirinos is unable to open the season.

May replace Chirinos Trevino may replace Robinson Chirinos (ankle) as the starting catcher, Sam Blum of the Dallas Morning News reports.

Impact Chirinos suffered a right ankle injury in a collision during Monday's intrasquad game and could miss a few days as a result. Texas manager Chris Woodward is looking at Trevino as a potential replacement and feels Trevino has made significant improvement at the plate. "What I've seen as the biggest difference is the bat. The swing changes he's made, the commitment to his work and being able to handle all of that is tough for a catcher, especially a young catcher," said the manager.
