INJURIES

Sent in for tests on knee Mets manager Luis Rojas said Monday that Martinez underwent tests on his injured left knee, but the team doesn't have an update on the status, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record r...
Impact Rojas said that Martinez is dealing with some stiffness in his left knee, an injury he picked up while lunging at a ground ball during Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Marlins. The Mets are viewing Martinez as day-to-day until the results of his follow-up tests become available.

Dealing with knee injury Martinez suffered a knee injury during Sunday's spring game against the Marlins, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
Impact The 32-year-old sustained the injury while lunging for a groundball down the line, and manager Luis Rojas called the injury a "twisted left knee." Martinez could undergo an MRI on Monday to determine the severity of the injury, which could complicate his path to an Opening Day roster spot.

Non-tendered by Cubs Martinez was non-tendered by the Cubs on Wednesday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports.
Impact Martinez was traded from the Rays to the Cubs in 2020, but he struggled mightily in Chicago. He went 0-for-21 with one walk while appearing in 10 games and was unable to solidify himself as the designated hitter. The 32-year-old will now become a free agent following his disappointing campaign.
DECEMBER 2, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Optioned again Martinez was optioned by the Cubs on Friday, Gordon Wittenmyer of NBC Sports Chicago reports.
Impact Martinez doesn't have a single hit in 21 plate appearances as a Cub. With just three days remaining in the regular season, it appears as though he'll end the season hitless for his new team. Patrick Wisdom was called up in a corresponding move.
SEPTEMBER 25, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Sent to secondary site Martinez was optioned to the Cubs' alternate training site Tuesday.
Impact Martinez had accomplished very little since joining the Cubs at the deadline, going 0-for-14 at the plate for his new team. He's hitting just .198/.286/.321 on the season. Billy Hamilton was called up in a corresponding move.
SEPTEMBER 8, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Sitting again Monday Martinez is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Cardinals.
Impact Since making his Cubs debut Sept. 1, Martinez has started in only three of the Cubs' eight games. Martinez should occupy a regular spot in the lineup versus left-handed pitching, but Cubs manager David Ross may prefer to rotate a number of other players in at designated hitter when the team faces right-handed starters.
SEPTEMBER 7, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Sitting for afternoon game Martinez will be on the bench for the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Cardinals.
Impact Martinez has yet to record a hit in his first 10 at-bats since joining the Cubs at the deadline. Kyle Schwarber will be the designated hitter in the first game of the day, though Martinez could return for the nightcap.
SEPTEMBER 5, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Acquired by Cubs Martinez was traded from the Rays to the Cubs on Sunday in exchange for two players to be named later or cash considerations, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Impact The Cubs have been rotating Willson Contreras and Victor Caratini between catcher and designated hitter so far this season, but Martinez figures to be the primary option at designated hitter going forward, especially against lefties. Martinez got off to a strong start this season with an .850 OPS through his first 12 games, but he finished his time with the Rays going 5-for-26.
AUGUST 30, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
On base thrice in win Martinez went 2-for-3 with a walk in an extra-inning win over the Blue Jays on Saturday.
Impact Martinez still hasn't quite hit his stride at the plate this season, as Saturday's multi-hit effort was his first since Aug. 1 and fourth of the campaign. The veteran has only one extra-base hit, a double, in his last nine contests as well, but his nine walks have helped him to a solid .338 on-base percentage.

Enjoying solid August Martinez, who went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in the first game of a doubleheader against the Yankees on Saturday, is hitting .294 (5-for-17) with a double, Saturday's homer,...
Impact The veteran has been consistently on base thus far, hitting safely in four of those contests and producing one multi-hit effort. Martinez has appeared as the designated hitter in all eight games he's played thus far, although he did take reps at first base in both spring training and summer camp and could therefore be utilized there on occasion as well. However, prior seasons have shown Martinez's strong suit is definitely the bat, as his defense was often a liability in St. Louis.

AUGUST 8, 2020 • Associated Press
Another multi-hit effort Martinez went 2-for-4 with an RBI single and a run in a win over the Braves on Tuesday.
Impact Martinez, often referred to during his days as a Cardinal as simply a "professional hitter" for his natural ability in the batter's box, continues to live up to that term in the early going of the 2020 season. The 32-year-old has quickly discarded any rust brought about by his delayed July 17 arrival at summer camp, now having put together back-to-back two-hit efforts and pushing his average to .313 with Tuesday's production.

On track for Opening Day Manager Kevin Cash said Wednesday that Martinez is expected to be available for the start of the season, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact The veteran slugger reported to camp less than a week ago, but he wasted little time and was starting intrasquad games within two days of his arrival. Martinez is unlikely to step into a regular starting role during his first year with the Rays, but his career .976 OPS against left-handers should warrant some opportunities.
JULY 22, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Gets solid work in Sunday Martinez completed defensive drills before playing first base and logging four at-bats in an intrasquad game Sunday, RaysRadio.com reports.
Impact The veteran has unsurprisingly been put right to work since his delayed arrival in camp Friday, and Sunday was his busiest day yet. Martinez took three of his at-bats against right-handed pitchers but also particularly hit the ball hard versus southpaw Aaron Loup, and his performance caught the eye of manager Kevin Cash, who will likely be closer to a decision on Martinez's Opening Day status after Wednesday's camp session. "Really wanted to prioritize getting him at-bats," said Cash. "It was for him to get out there and get at least three innings on his feet and on defense, get a little bit of the feel, the flow of the game and we'll continue to build."
JULY 19, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Starting intrasquad game Martinez is starting at first base in Sunday's intrasquad game, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact The 31-year-old didn't report to camp until Friday, but manager Kevin Cash indicated he could be available for Opening Day, and his presence in Sunday's intrasquad action reinforces that possibility. Martinez appears to be trending in the right direction, and he seems likely to be ready for the start of the season, assuming everything goes well this week.
JULY 19, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Fighting chance for Opening Day Martinez, who arrived in summer camp Friday after quarantining due to a positive COVID-19 test, still has a chance to be in the Opening Day lineup despite his delayed start, Juan T...
Impact The offseason acquisition was limited to riding a stationary bike Saturday, and he's slated to continue working on his conditioning Sunday. However, Martinez is also scheduled to participate in defensive drills with third-base coach Rodney Linares and even take some at-bats against live pitching. Working in Martinez's favor in his race against the clock is the fact he had a strong spring training and also was attending informal workouts at Tropicana Field before summer camp began, meaning he may have just enough time to get his timing sufficiently down before Opening Day.
