On track for Saturday activation
Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said Romano (elbow) has a "strong chance" of being activated from the 10-day injured list Saturday, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Impact
Just as Toronto anticipated, Romano looks to be trending toward a minimum-length stay on the IL due to right elbow neuritis. Once activated, Romano should re-enter the closer picture for Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo, who hasn't settled on a clear ninth-inning man before or since Romano was placed on the IL. Anthony Castro recorded Toronto's lone save since Romano was deactivated, and it was only of the one-out variety.

Likely back after 10-day minimum
Romano (elbow) is expected to be activated from the 10-day injured list when eligible Saturday, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Impact
The 27-year-old landed on the injured list April 15 with right ulnar neuritis, but he's throwing a side session Sunday since it's apparently a minor issue. Romano should be back next weekend if he avoids any setbacks throughout the week. The right-hander could step in as Toronto's closer since Julian Merryweather (oblique) is likely facing a longer absence.

Not facing lengthy absence
Romano's elbow injury is believed to be a short-term issue, Gregor Chisholm of the Toronto Star reports.
Impact
Romano was placed on the 10-day injured list with right ulnar neuritis Thursday, but he isn't expected to spend much more than the minimum amount of time on the IL. Since Julian Merryweather (oblique) is believed to have more of a long-term injury, Romano could see save chances for the Blue Jays once he's back in action.

Placed on injured list
Romano was placed on the 10-day injured list with right ulnar neuritis Thursday.
Impact
Romano was expected to see save opportunities in the absence of Julian Merryweather (oblique). However, he's now dealing with an arm issue of his own, though it's unclear how long his absence will extend. Rafael Dolis figures to be to the top candidate to step into the ninth inning role in a currently depleted Blue Jays' bullpen.

Could step in as closer
Romano appears in line to handle the bulk of the save chances for Toronto for at least the next week and a half after Julian Merryweather (oblique) was placed on the 10-day injured...
Impact
Manager Charlie Montoyo had yet to anoint a pitcher as the team's closer this season, but Merryweather's initial usage seemed to suggest that he was the skipper's preferred option for the ninth inning. If Merryweather can move past the injury in the minimum amount of time or close to it, he should factor back into the closing picture, but Romano looks like the top candidate for saves out of the Toronto bullpen in the short term. Though he was tagged with a blown save earlier this season, Romano was Toronto's best reliever when healthy in 2020, submitting a 1.23 ERA and 0.89 WHIP while striking out 21 over 14.2 innings.

Tagged with blown save
Romano gave up two hits in two-thirds of an inning Thursday to get charged with a blown save in an extra-innings loss to the Angels.
Impact
After Trent Thornton gave up a single to Dexter Fowler with one out in the top of the seventh inning and the Jays leading 5-4, Romano got the call to face the top of the Angels' order and allowed the inherited runner to score on a Shohei Ohtani base hit. Romano has consistently seen high-leverage usage in the late innings to begin the season, but as yet that hasn't translated into save opportunities, and Julian Merryweather's impressive performance so far could be inching him towards locking down the closer role. Romano hasn't pitched poorly though, posting a 0.00 ERA and 3:2 K:BB through his first three appearances (2.2 innings) with a win and a hold.

Earns win against Yankees
Romano (1-0) allowed no hits and two walks while striking out two over one scoreless inning as he earned the win against the Yankees on Thursday.
Impact
Romano came on with the game tied in the ninth inning Thursday, and he earned the win as the Blue Jays scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning. The right-hander should serve as the primary closer for Toronto this year with Kirby Yates (elbow) out for the season.

Keeps performing well
Romano struck out the side without allowing a hit during his appearance Monday.
Impact
Romano needed only 15 pitches to retire the side in order, nine of which went for strikes. He now has a 12:1 K:BB across five innings of work this spring and could be the favorite for saves in Toronto with Kirby Yates (arm) sidelined.

Could fill in at closer for Yates
Romano appears to be next in line to close games for Toronto to begin the season after Kirby Yates (arm) revealed Monday that he would miss multiple weeks after being diagnosed wit...
Impact
Toronto had never officially named Yates its closer after signing him to a one-year deal this offseason, but he had been in line to fill that role so long as he made a full recovery from the procedure he required last fall to remove bone spurs from his elbow. Based on his comments Monday, Yates seems to have suffered a setback that leaves him without a definitive timeline for a return, opening the door for Romano to potentially step in as the Blue Jays' ninth-inning man. Before his own 2020 campaign was cut short by a sprained finger, Romano was a breakout performer in the Toronto bullpen, posting a 1.23 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 21:5 K:BB in 14.2 innings while scooping up two saves and five holds. He's returned to action healthily and effectively this spring, and his skills could make him an elite option at closer if he's able to hold down the job for the duration of Yates' absence.
