Goes on 60-day IL The White Sox placed Stiever (lat) on the 60-day injured list Thursday, LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Impact Though Stiever has been in attendance at big-league camp, he remains limited to rehab work and wasn't expected to be ready to pitch at the start of the season after undergoing surgery on his right lat Aug. 23. The move to the 60-day IL officially rules Stiever out for the first two months of the campaign and opens up a 40-man roster spot for waiver pickup Yoan Aybar. Stiever will be eligible to begin a minor-league rehab assignment during his stint on the IL, and once the 60 days lapse and if he's deemed fully healthy, he'll likely slot into the rotation at Triple-A Charlotte.

Gets season-ending lat surgery White Sox director of player development Chris Getz said that Stiever underwent season-ending surgery Monday to address a lat injury, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.

Impact Stiever sustained the injury in his Aug. 12 start at Triple-A Charlotte and was placed on the 7-day injured list three days later. After making two spot starts with the White Sox in 2020, Stiever was limited to one relief appearance at the big-league level in 2021 while all the key members of the Chicago rotation have generally maintained good health. Stiever didn't help his case for earning a longer look in the majors by submitting a 5.72 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in 74 innings at Triple-A before being shut down with the lat injury. Getz said Stiever is expected to make a full recovery over the winter and return to action in spring training.

Could fill innings behind Kopech The White Sox recalled Stiever from their alternate training site ahead of Sunday's game against the Rangers, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.

Impact With the start of the minor-league season just over a week away, Stiever should be in store for a brief stay with the White Sox, but he could fill an important role Sunday. Michael Kopech is scheduled to start the contest, but he likely won't be able to work much longer than the three innings he tossed in his last outing April 18 in Boston. According to Fegan, manager Tony La Russa noted that he doesn't expect Liam Hendriks, Aaron Bummer or Codi Heuer to be available out of the bullpen due to workload concerns, so Stiever -- who is stretched out to 100 pitches -- could be called upon to piggyback Kopech on Sunday.

White Sox-Cleveland postponed Stiever and the White Sox won't face Cleveland on Wednesday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather in Northeast Ohio, Tom Withers of the Associated Press reports.

Impact Chicago didn't announce a starter for Wednesday's game prior to the postponement, but Stiever was believed to be a candidate to either start or work as a bulk reliever after he was recalled from the alternate site.
