INJURIES

Likely headed to IL Cueto's biceps issue re-occured in his start Monday against the Twins and he will likely land on the 15-day injured list, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact As Mish notes, Cueto was dealing with a biceps issue a couple weeks ago and it was a problem Monday, The veteran righty gave up four earned runs on three hits and one walk, including a pair of home runs, over one inning without striking out any batters. Braxton Garrett would be an option to replace Cueto in the rotation.

Exits start with trainer Cueto left Monday's start against the Twins with an apparent injury in the second inning, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Impact Cueto gave up four runs on three hits with a walk and no strikeouts before exiting with a trainer. Jeff Lindgren has come into the contest to replace the veteran right-hander. A reason for Cueto's exit should be presented shortly.

Twins try to continue win streak, take on the Marlins

The Minnesota Twins will look to keep a three-game win streak alive when they take on the Miami Marlins

Lined up as No. 5 starter Cueto (arm) is tentatively scheduled to start the Marlins' fifth regular-season game next Monday against the Twins, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact Cueto came down with some general arm soreness earlier this month, but he threw 61 pitches over 4.2 innings in a minor-league game last Friday and is set to take the mound again Wednesday in Jupiter. It's looking like the veteran right-hander will indeed be a normal-functioning member of the Miami rotation to begin the 2023 campaign.

Throws 61 pitches in minors game Cueto (arm) threw 61 pitches over 4.2 innings in a minor-league game Friday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Impact Cueto had to be scratched from an appearance earlier this week due to some arm soreness, but he has thrown a bullpen session and now made a minor-league appearance since without issue. He's back on track to open the season in the Marlins' rotation.

Throws bullpen without issue Cueto (arm) threw a bullpen session Wednesday without issue, Barry Jackson and Craig Mish of the Miami Herald report.
Impact Cueto was held out of some scheduled back-field work this past Monday due to general arm soreness, but he passed the test Wednesday and will throw again Friday. If all goes well from this point forward, the veteran right-hander should be able to take the ball for the Marlins somewhere within the first week of the 2023 regular season.

Dealing with arm soreness Cueto has his back-field work skipped Monday due to what the Marlins are labeling as general arm soreness, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact Manager Skip Schumaker indicated the team isn't concerned, however. "This is a time where there's no reason to push through this general soreness," Schumaker said. "We're [about] a week away. If he needs another extra day, you give people extra days and that's the value of spring training. You're allowed to do that." More worrisome for the Marlins might be Cueto's performance so far this spring -- the 37-year-old got tagged for 11 runs in 3.2 innings over two starts before leaving camp for the WBC, and he wasn't much better in one start for the Dominican Republic, coughing up three runs over two innings in his only appearance. Cueto is still penciled into a spot in the Opening Day rotation, but if Miami determines he needs more time to round into shape, it could open the door for Braxton Garrett to get a start or two in April. Cueto is currently set to throw a bullpen session Wednesday, and if all goes well he could see game action as soon as Friday.

Start pushed back due to soreness Cueto's scheduled Grapefruit League start Monday against the Cardinals was pushed back after he experienced unspecified soreness, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact Where Cueto was experiencing the soreness isn't clear, but the hope is that he'll be ready to throw a bullpen session Wednesday, so it doesn't sound overly serious. If that happens, Cueto should be able to get in one more Grapefruit League start before the beginning of the regular season. Cueto is slated to open 2023 toward the back end of the Miami rotation.

Brutal start to spring Cueto has coughed up 11 earned runs in 3.2 innings through his first two Grapefruit League starts, allowing 11 hits and a walk while striking out two.
Impact The 37-year-old righty had a surprising bounce-back campaign with the White Sox in 2022 and parlayed it into a one-year, $6 million deal with the Marlins this winter that contains a team option for 2024. Cueto's early spring efforts are far from encouraging, but he'll get a chance to put them behind him while pitching for Team Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic, and as yet his spot in the Opening Day rotation for Miami doesn't seem to be in jeopardy.

Agrees to deal with Marlins Cueto signed a one-year, $6 million contract with a $10.5 million club option for 2024 with the Marlins on Tuesday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Impact The buyout on the option is $2.5 million, so Cueto is guaranteed at least $8.5 million in the deal. It's a move that adds depth to a Marlins rotation which already had lots of it, so it would make sense if the team flipped at least one starter for lineup help. Cueto is coming off a nice 2022 campaign with the White Sox that saw him post a 3.35 ERA with 102 strikeouts across 158.1 innings. His fantasy appeal is limited to deeper formats.

Rebounds with strong start Cueto (8-10) earned the win Monday, allowing two runs on six hits and no walks with four punchouts over seven innings against Minnesota.
Impact Cueto was effective through seven innings, the only damage coming via two-run home run off the bat of Gio Urshela in the top of the first inning. The quality start was a great end to the season, as Cueto earned a 6.34 ERA over 32.2 innings in six starts leading up to Monday. The 36-year-old veteran finishes the season with a 3.35 ERA, eight wins, 18 quality starts and 102 strikeouts over 158.1 innings.
